Buchanan’s childhood goal was to become Batman, so his earliest relationship with fitness naturally began with martial arts. Both his brother and sister were gymnasts, and as Buchanan became stronger and more coordinated he realized being Batman might involve doing a back-handspring; Buchanan’s first big physical challenge. Attempt after attempt, landing on his face many times, he struggled with this skill for a long time. Finally, through a combination of drilling technique, working with trusted coaches and facing fears, Buchanan finally got it, and could then do it easily. While Buchanan continued with gymnastics, he became more involved in theater and dance. His love for learning and focusing on technique and an appreciation for the rewards it can bring were developed in all of these activities.
In college fitness fell by the wayside. It seemed that sort of relationship to athletics was reserved for childhood or professional athletes. That is, until his good friend introduced him to CrossFit NYC. Even in his Fundamentals classes it was evident that CrossFit could provide the next level of intensive, fun, competitive, challenging, technique-rich athleticism he had been missing.
Now as a CFNYC coach, Buchanan is eager to share everything he knows in regards to CrossFit training, movement, and technique. He believes it’s important to pay attention to how you move in class and and track personal progress to achieve results. Just like it took him many attempts and struggling with fear to get his first handspring, he now sees how he can help others just like his trusted gymnastics coaches did for him. Buchanan thinks CFNYC is a place where you can accumulate these sorts of personal successes, face fears while becoming stronger, all while having fun and making friends!
