What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is an extremely efficient and effective way to get into world-class shape. Our workouts consist of constantly varied, functional movements (like pushups and pullups, deadlifts and squats, gymnastics, kettlebells, running, rowing, and olympic lifting), executed at high intensity in a group setting. Essentially, a fun, friendly, yet high-intensity boot camp, with weights.

Where is CrossFit NYC?

We’re at 44 W. 28th St., 2nd floor, between 6th Ave and Broadway. The closest subways are the N or R at 28th St. (& Broadway), the 6 at 28th St. (& Park Ave. South), the F or M at 23rd St. (& Sixth Ave.) and the 1 at 28th St. (& 7th Ave.).

Do I need experience or some minimum level of fitness?

CrossFit is for anyone, regardless of their age or fitness level. Our members range from professional athletes and members of the New York FBI SWAT Team to grandfathers in their mid-seventies and desk jockeys with barely enough hand-eye coordination to use a mouse. In short, if you care about health, real-world performance, or just want to look better naked, CrossFit is for you.

What if I’m REALLY out of shape and I’m kind of terrified?

We promise you’ll be totally fine. Trust us. We’ve had tons of people come in the door who were fatter, weaker, older, and less coordinated than you are, and they were totally fine. And, more importantly, most of them joined the gym and are now in great shape. Seriously, just come learn more about getting started.

I have/had an injury. Can I still do CrossFit?

While we are not physicians (and we highly recommend you discuss any workout program with yours), we do find that many of our members have successfully used CrossFit to rehabilitate from injuries. Because people continue to move, work, and play in the real world regardless of injury history, we believe the best route to long-term health is to learn perfect form on functional movements, and to slowly build strength in those movements, rather than to avoid them altogether. Our instructors are always happy to work with you to scale and substitute exercises and tailor workouts to your abilities. That said, we cannot offer you specific medical advice, and advise that you consult your physician before starting this (or any other) exercise program.

What happens in a free Intro Class?

Each Intro Class contains a quick summary of the concepts behind CrossFit. You’ll then learn perfect form on a couple of simple, functional movements, which you’ll piece together into a real CrossFit workout, to give you a taste of our approach. You are welcome to come to as many free Intro Classes as you’d like, though after just a first class, most people realize they could be in far better shape, much faster, by doing CrossFit, and quickly join up.

I have not done CrossFit, but I’m really fit and would like to skip the Elements Workshop and just sign up for a Workout of the Day membership. Can I do that?

No. We require everyone to take Elements, so that we can make sure all of our members have a basis of safe and effective movement. That also makes WOD classes better for everyone, since we don’t have to start from scratch each time a movement is used just so the new guy can keep up.

What if I can’t fit one of the Elements Workshops into my schedule? Do you do Private Elements?

Yes. For $499 you can take a completely private Elements workshop, or you and a friend can do it for $399 each. Email elements@crossfitnyc.com and we can help with scheduling.

I just relocated to New York, but I’ve been CrossFitting for a while elsewhere. Can I please come to a WOD class?

If you’ve done a fundamentals or on-ramp program at another CrossFit box, or have at least six months experience training at an affiliate, you’d likely be fine hopping in to the WOD. Email us to discuss.

Can I just come to The Black Box and work out on my own?

No. We think you’ll get better, safer, faster results by working with a qualified coach – either in classes or one-on-one sessions – than working out alone. As a result, we’re not set up to allow people to work out unsupervised.

What do I need to bring?

Just yourself. And basic ‘workout clothes’: shorts or sweats, a t-shirt, sneakers. We provide everything else.

Do I have to become a member to do personal training?

No. Personal training is available to both members and non-members, at the same price.

Do you take credit cards, cash, and personal checks?

Yes, we accept cash, personal checks, MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover.

Can I have a receipt?

Yes you can; printed, emailed or both. We can also provided attendance information, and other data often required by health insurance plans that subsidize gym membership costs.

Do you sell t-shirts?

Of course. Come on down and buy something awesome.

Do you have showers?

Yes we do! Private showers and towel service are available at both of our locations.
