Q. Do I need experience or some minimum level of fitness?
A. No. Our workouts and exercises scale to any level. We've had everyone from eighty-five-year-old grandmothers to morbidly obese people, and they've all been fine. You will too.
Q. I have/had an injury. Can I still do CrossFit?
A. Many of our members have successfully used CrossFit to rehabilitate from minor injuries. Because people continue to move, work, and play in the real world regardless of injury history, we believe the best route to long-term health is to learn perfect form on functional movements, then to slowly build strength in those movements, rather than to avoid them altogether. At the same time, our instructors are always happy to work with you to scale and substitute exercises, to tailor workouts to your abilities.
That said, we cannot offer you specific medical advice, and advise that you consult your physician before starting this (or any other) exercise program.
Q. How do I start?
Come on down for a free beginners' class. You can attend as many as you'd like, to get a taste of CrossFit workouts and see if CFNYC might be a good fit for you.
A. First you must complete the three-week-long Elements Workshop series.
Q. I'm really fit and would like to skip the beginners' class and come to the Workout of the Day (WOD) class, can I do that?
A. No. There are no drop-ins to the WOD classes. You must complete our three-week-long Elements Workshop before being allowed to take WOD classes.
Q. But what if I'm really, really fit?
A. No means no. If you are really, really fit, we can scale up the workouts in the Elements & beginners' classes for you. We promise we can leave you lying on the floor, sore and gasping, after even a beginners' class.
Q. I'm just visiting New York, but I've been CrossFitting for so long that I do kipping pullups in my sleep. Can I please come to a WOD class?
A. We welcome experienced CrossFitters from all over the world. Just check our class schedule and come in for a WOD class. Be sure to let your instructor know your level of experience with crossfit-style training if you have any limitations or are still at a beginner level. Please note that it's $20 to drop in ($15 for full-time mil/fire/police/students) and to pre-pay for a drop-in class, click here. (If paying upon arrival for class, cash or check is preferred for speed of transaction.)
Q. I just relocated to New York, but I've been CrossFitting so long that I named my kids "Fran" and "Helen". Can I please come to a WOD class?
A. We'll need to assess your crossfit abilities and whether or not you need to complete the Elements Workshop. Unless you've trained extensively at another affiliate and gone through a foundations program there similar to our Elements Workshop (to learn all the crossfit movements thoroughly and effectively), chances are you'll be required by us to go through our Elements Workshop. To discuss further, please contact us at info@crossfitnyc.com if you are in this situation.
A. 6 sessions for $300. (In addition, the $300 charge entitles you to two free weeks' worth of unlimited Workout of the Day classes that begin immediately upon successful completion of the Elements Workshop.)
A. We limit the class size to no more than 6 people. Each class is taught by a CrossFit-certified coach. A similar workshop covering similar material would cost you $300-$500 for one day and you would not get nearly the same level of attention. We spread out the information learned over the course of three weeks so you can assimilate it better.
Q. What if I can't fit one of the Elements Workshops into my schedule? Do you do Private Elements?
A. Absolutely. Email us at info@crossfitnyc.com for more info or to set something up. Please note that Private Elements cost $500 if done 1-on-1. If you have a group of friends or fellow athletes you'd like to do Private Elements with, the rates are as follows: 2 trainees, $400 each; 3 or more trainees, $300 each.
Q. What if I don't want to join CrossFit NYC but would prefer to strictly work with one of your trainers one-on-one?
A. You are more than welcome to do so. Please learn more about our trainers on our trainers' bios page and email us for more info on how to be matched up with a trainer. Our rates vary from trainer to trainer and there are series discounts available for those looking to train long-term with one of our trainers.
Q. Do you take credit cards, cash, and personal checks?
A. Yes, we accept cash, personal checks, MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover.
Q. Can I have a receipt?
A. Yes you can--printed, emailed or both.
Q. How much is a membership?
A. Once you have successfully completed our Elements Workshop, you can become a regular member. As of January 2010, we charge $200/month for unlimited classes, 7 days a week. We also offer a 6-month membership at $1000 (that's 6 months for the price of 5). Further, if you'd rather pay a drop-in fee instead of become a member, classes are $20 each. To pre-pay for a drop-in class, click here.
Q. Do you offer discounted membership to full-time students, active military, police officers, and firefighters?
A. Yes we do. Anyone who has proof that they fall into one of the above categories qualifies for $160/month membership or a 6-month membership at $800 (that's 6 months for the price of 5) upon successful completion of the Elements Workshop (please note that no discounts are offered for the Elements Workshop itself).
Q. Can I sign up for membership online through your website?
A. Yes you can. However, please be sure not to sign up for membership until you have successfully finished our Elements Workshop. However, once you have finished the workshop, you can click here to sign up for membership (once you click through, choose the "classes" option, which will then allow you to select the proper membership option for you).
Q. Do you sell t-shirts?
A. Of course. Come on down to the Box and get some! $20--cash, check or charge.
Q. Do you have showers?
A. Yes we do! We have 4 individual showers, each with its own private changing room. We provide the shampoo, you bring your own towel.
Q. Can I just come to The Black Box and work out on my own?
A. No. We are more like a dojo than a typical commercial gym. We offer classes and one-on-one sessions, where people work out under trainer supervision, as it yields better, safer, and faster results than having people simply use the facility by themselves.
