CrossFit NYC’s Weightlifting Team

CrossFit NYC’s Weightlifting team competed at their first competition this past Saturday November 14th in Pleasantville, NY. To say that they did well is an understatement, since most of the team members placed in the top 3 for their weight class despite it being their first ever weightlifting meet. There were also many personal bests in the Snatch, Clean & Jerk, or Total (score for both Snatch and Clean & Jerk combined). To top it off, our team won first overall in the competition!

Highlights for the women’s team:

Jennifer Nelson hit 36kg in the Snatch and 46kg in the Clean and Jerk which put her in 1st place in the 53kg category and 1st place in the Female Master’s division.

Amanda Palmeri hit 44kg in the Snatch and 56kg in the Clean and Jerk which put her in 3rd place in the 58kg category, and hit all competition personal bests.

Cheryl Zhao hit 55kg in the Snatch and 67kg in the Clean and Jerk which put her in 3rd place in the 69kg category.

Chelsea Reagan hit 46kg in the Snatch and 58kg in the Clean and Jerk, a personal best in the Snatch.

Jessica Avelar hit 35kg in the Snatch and 52kg in the Clean and Jerk which put her in 3rd place for the 75kg category.

Patty Hwang hit 44kg in the Snatch and 58kg in the Clean and Jerk which put her in 2nd place for the 75kg category, and a personal best in the Total.

Erin Kratzer hit 71kg in the Snatch and 95kg in the Clean and Jerk which put her in 1st place in the 75kg category as well as hitting all personal bests.

Major shout out Coach Brian for going above and beyond every single day. While most coaches at the event only had a couple of athletes competing…he had FOURTEEN and was on point all day from 9am to 9pm straight through with no breaks. He is truly invested in every athlete and every single lift we do. Couldn’t possibly be more proud to be a member of this team. We are grinding every day to be better. This is only the beginning!

The progress Brian and our members have made with our Olympic Lifting program has exceeded our greatest expectations. If we do not yet have the most extensive Olympic Lifting program in the City, we will soon. We currently offer two tracks of Olympic Lifting classes:

One day per week of “Olympic Lifting” can be used to supplement either the Beginner, Experienced, or Competition programming. These classes are currently available at 28th Street on Wednesday at 12:30 PM and 5:00 PM and at 67th Street on Thursday at 7:30 PM. The demand has been tremendous, and the number of these classes is likely to expand again in January.

“Black Box Barbell” follows 5-day per week programming, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at 7:10 PM and 8:10 PM, and Sunday at 1:00 PM.

Finally, we now have “Post Elements” Classes #1 and #2 on Saturday at 28th Street (9:00 AM and 10:00 AM) and at 67th Street 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM. These classes are intended for new Elements grads and/or members who would like a basic introduction to the Olympic Lifts.

    Congrats, everyone!

Congrats to everybody for the meet and to coach Brian of course.

One month ago, I made the switch from attending the Olympic lifting classes only on Sunday to the 5 day/week schedule. I definitely don’t regret it. The group is great, the atmosphere is awesome and Coach Brian is so focus and dedicated ! (It’s already impressive how he remember the name of everybody who come to his classes but how can he also remember all our maxes?)

Let’s dream about the fourth floor being converted into a Black Box Barbell space with rows of shiny platforms, a giant PR board, all size of blocks, spinning bars and colored kilograms plates.

Look like Brian is right, I’m always over-thinking 🙁

Had a great time competing with the Barbell team and Coach Brian. I’ve been crossfitting for four years so it’s not every day I get new personal bests. After dedicating some time to Oly lifting before my first comp I was ecstatic to hit PRs on both lifts and to have a new total to work off of.. and I finally understand lifting in kilo’s! Glad that CFNYC is rolling out this program with Coach Brain spearheading it. Look forward to competing more in the future.
