Announcing: New “Experienced” WOD’s

Effective Monday, February 17, we will be offering “Experienced” WOD’s that will be geared towards members who have six to twelve months of CrossFit experience. In general, people taking the Experienced WOD’s should be able to do most basic bodyweight exercises RX’d, and be looking to develop handstand push ups and muscle-ups. People taking the Experienced WOD’s should have a pretty good idea of their 1RM’s on all lifts, and know how to scale as needed.

On the other hand, the Experience WOD’s will not be the Competition WOD’s. We expect about a third of our members will feel comfortable in the Experienced WOD’s and that many of our members who have been actively CrossFitting for a year or more will prefer these classes, which will focus less on the basics and more on the nuances. If you wander into an Experienced WOD, you will not find the coach speaking another language, but neither will you hear a discussion about how to get in and out of a band.

Experienced WOD’s will be Monday through Friday at 6:20 AM, 7:20 AM, 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 8:00 PM (except Friday).

No Beginner WOD’s are being eliminated. The morning Beginner WOD’s at 6:20 AM and 7:20 AM and the evening Beginner WOD’s at 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 8:00 PM will shift to the Third Floor at 26th Street, so that the Experienced WOD’s can use the quadrant at 28th Street also used for the Competition WOD’s (to have access to ropes, rings, etc.).

The specific weekday coaching assignments will be as follows:

Chris: Mon thru Fri: 5:20 AM Beginner, 6:20 AM Experienced, 7:20 AM Experienced, 8:30 AM All Levels at 28th Street
Kate: Mon and Fri: 6:20 AM Beginner and 7:20 AM Beginner on Third Floor at 26th Street.

  • Robert Gillespie

Sounds awesome, looking forward to it.

  • Craig Bagno

nice. thanks for not canceling beginner wods at the expense of experienced woods. most appreciated. both for the addition, and the lack of subtraction.

    everybody wins. excellent.

  • Dani Freeman

Are the 6:30 all level wods at 26th going away?

    • Hari Singh

Sully will have those on Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri at 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM on the Fourth Floor at 26th Street.

In the AM, these will be 6:20 AM and 7:20 AM Beginner WOD’s on the Third Floor at 26th Street.

      • Mike Volpe

I’m not sure I understand the switch with the classes at 26th street. The 6:30 am class consists of a majority of experienced athletes who have been consistently going to that class. It doesn’t make sense to: A) switch it to 6:20 and B) make it a beginners level class. It would make more sense to have the experienced level classes at 26th since we require less instruction and less “space.” 28th street is ideal for beginners since there is more space to move around and practice. Is it possible keep the same time intervals at 26th (6:30 am and 7:30 am) and call the 6:30 am experienced level wod and the 7:30 am a beginners level wod? As I mentioned before, the majority of people there have been doing crossfit for a while and can be considered “experienced.”

        • Hari Singh

While it is true that many people who take the 6:30 AM WOD are experienced, they are not the only people who are experienced; in fact they are probably not the majority of people who are experienced at that hour.

One of our objectives in setting up the Experienced WOD’s was to have them at the exact same times as Beginner WOD’s, so that people would choose one or the other, without having that decision influenced by their schedule. (Currently, the 6:30 AM is open to anyone, including people who can and do show up the day after finishing Elements.)

We decided to (1) sync the timing of Beginner and Experienced WOD’s, which meant that the HR:30 AM WOD’s at 26th were moving to HR:20, either way; and (2) we had to choose one location or the other for each. (We didn’t want to do both at the same time at 28th, because we didn’t want a rush to the showers from two classes finishing at the same time.

We choose 28th Street for the Experienced WOD’s because it has better access to rings, ropes, and other equipment more likely to be used by experienced members. We choose 26th Street for the Beginner WOD’s, because that is where everyone takes AM Elements, so the transition would be particularly easy for those new members.

I generally agree with Mike and for those of us who prefer 26th street for a number of reasons, this is the fourth schedule change in the last year (7am –> 645am –> 630am –> 620am). That said, I am going to chalk this up to being prepared for the unknown and the unknowable and find a new class at 28th street. Upside is the chance to lift with Reis, Michael S and iRon Bucks again…

          • James K

I share the same sentiment as both of you. I feel like every time I get into a routine, my schedule is forced to change. Here is to finding a new class with the same energy as 6:30am. I have no idea where I am going to land, do you know where you are headed Ben?

          • BenS

Don’t know yet. Maybe 640, 7 or 720 at 28th or 720 at 26th…620 is a bit early for me.

  • AndyK

Great move forward for CFNYC. Wish they were during a time that I could attend, but hopefully they will be well received enough for more classes to be added in the future.

  • Obviously

Are the Experienced WODs the same workout as the Beginner WODs, or will be the programming be different? Thank you.

    • Hari Singh

      Same WOD’s.

      • Obviously

  • Jenny

Is the above the complete schedule? I don’t see the HR:45 classes listed above (nor do I see any mention of Sully). I’m confused because you have HR:00, HR:20, and HR:40 all listed.

    • Hari Singh

Sully will have Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri at 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM on the Fourth Floor at 26th Street.

There will be no HR:45 All Levels WOD’s on the Third Floor; these have been replaced by the HR:00 Beginner WOD’s on the Third Floor.

      • Jenny

So this solves the question of why I mysteriously had no classes pre-registered after Friday.

So, All Level WODs are eliminated (on weekdays) and the Experienced WODs are kind of like the old Blackbox WODs. Thanks for the clarification.

      • Nicole

Apparently Sully is going to 67th street on Wednesday at 7pm according to Zen Planner. Is this a temporary move? Sully’s long time followers are a little concerned with the change in the time of his classes… and now the location as well.

        • Hari Singh

          I’m also concerned about Sully.

  • Andrew R

    Really like the change, thanks!

  • Jim S

    Love it.

  • Eric

    This is awesome.

  • Jenny

It is deceiving to state no beginner WODs are being removed, but fail to mention that all of the All Level WODs are eliminated.

I understand that management tries to please everyone, but this is the 5th time in 1.5 years that the 5:30/5:45 classes have changed. I imagine (and hope) there are issues behind the scenes necessitating another change. I will of course switch coaches and class times again. I hope management realizes patrons establish routines and work their schedules around classes. It is frustrating to have changes every 5-6 months.

    • Hari Singh

The 5:30 PM and the 6:30 PM All Levels WOD’s remain on Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri.

      • Jenny

All level WODs are currently on HR:45. The 26th street HR:30 classes are labeled as beginner next week.

        • Hari Singh

They’re currently labeled wrong. The 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM at 26th Street will be All Levels.

*Sigh* Gotta change my schedule around now to follow Brian to 00s. I actually liked the past few months at 26th. 28th tends to just have too much going on from the various quads in one floor.

    • Chad Kindred

I agree with this. I am planning on changing my schedule to stick with Brian, but I am not looking forward to heading back to 28th Street. It is much easier to focus at 26th Street.

  • Hilary K

Is the 4:40 class only on Fridays now?
