Schedule and Programming Changes, Effective Monday, July 1

Upper West Side (Limited) Classes

Effective July 1st, we’ll be kicking off a limited schedule at our new Upper West Side Location, a raw basement space at 157 Columbus Avenue (betweent 67th and 68th). We have learned a great deal from the build-out at 28 Street, and we expect to have the space completely finished this fall.

We recognize that we have many hard-core members who would value the immediate convenience of the Upper West Side over the amenities of our Flatiron facilities. Therefore, effective July 1, we will be offering two All Level WOD’s each morning at 6:10 AM and 7:10 AM and two each evening at 6:10 PM and 7:10 PM, Monday through Friday.

28 Street Classes, At Least One Class an Hour, 15 Hours a Day

We are adding a 2:00 PM and a 4:00 PM All Levels WOD, Monday through Friday. With these two new WOD’s, we will now have a WOD starting every hour on the hour from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM (7:00 PM on Friday).

To simplify the schedule:

  • All WOD’s that begin at HR:00, HR:10 (Upper West Side) HR:30, or HR:45 will be designated All Levels WOD’s.
  • All WOD’s that begin at HR:20 or HR:40 will be designated as Beginner WOD’s.

None of the class times or instructors are changing except:

  • Kevin will teach the 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM (in addition to his 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 8:00 PM)
  • David will teach the 5:00 PM
  • Sully will teach the 12:20 PM (moved from 12:30 PM) and the 2:00 PM (in addition to his 5:30 PM, 6:30 PM, and 7:30 PM.

Automatic Class Registration Based on Membership Seniority

We will be experimenting with allowing long-standing members to be automatically registered for up to four classes per week. This is an experiment. We’ll be starting with those who have been members for 24 months or longer; if it works, our goal is to extend this option to all members who have reached their one-year anniversary of continuous membership.

If you have maintained a continuous membership with CrossFit NYC since on or before June 30, 2011, you can be automatically enrolled in up to four classes per week. For example, if the Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri 7:00 AM are your regular preferred classes, we will permanently reserve a space for you in those classes. Thereafter, you will not need to register for these classes. You will, however, absolutely need to cancel, if you cannot make one of your classes.

If you take advantage of this option, once you are given a reserved spot in a class, you will be responsible to cancel each and every time you do not attend. If you fail to cancel, you will be removed from future classes. You should choose this option only if you have a fairly stable schedule.

Our goal is to make it easier for our long-time members to maintain their routine. However, we cannot fill up classes with people who do not show and then fail to cancel in a timely fashion. If you need to cancel, you should do so as far in advance as possible. For early AM classes, that should typically be the night before.

If you are interested in this option, please email Kristina.

Great news! I’ve been waiting for you guys to open an UWS location. When will we be able to sign up for the July classes?

    • Hari Singh

You will still need to do Elements at 28 Street (unless you are an experienced CrossFitter). Once you are a member, you can register for classes 5 days in advance (longer if you have been a member for over 24 months).

I was a member at 28 Street in 2010 for six months but then I moved uptown. I’ve been waiting for you guys to migrate up there. Psyched it’s finally happening!

        • Hari Singh

You’ll be good to go starting July 1. You can email Kristina at CrossFitNYC dot com, if you need any help getting signed up.

If you (or any other former member) would like to redo Elements, you can do so at 28 Street for half price any time.

Half price?! Damn! I wish I’d known that when I redid Elements last December. Oh well! Live and learn.

We will give you a credit. Email me. Hari at CrossFit NYC dot com

Have you thought about putting a cap on the amount of pre-registered-senior members can be in each class?

    • Hari Singh

Not in each class, per se, but as a percentage of the total slots. It seems likely the the senior people will not gravitate to the Beginner WOD’s.

We expect that the 10% of the people who have been with us for over two years will account for less than 5% of the total slots.

      • Anthony

Great point—I did not think of that. Doubtful that “seniors” will migrate to Beginner classes. The class I typically attend is being re-named as All Level–so, perhaps we’ll see a slight migration–but if 5% stands true, the impact on newer members should be minimum.
