Torch shouldering the Atlas Stone out at CFBK:
torchatlasstone.jpg

I told Kevin "Torch" Williams, one of our trainers, top athletes, and our operations manager out at CFBK, that as soon as he got the official word that he'd been accepted for OCS, I wanted him to let me know. I also asked that he write something up about his experiences for the blog. He was kind enough to do so, and he wrote something very special in my opinion. Without further ado, Torch, in his own words:

As many of you know, for the past several months I have been an active applicant to the USMC Officer Program. Yesterday, I received word that I have been selected to attend OCC 203 which requires me to report to Officer Candidates School in Quantico, VA mid-January. This decision was not an easy one to reach, nor the process a simple one to complete, but I am confident it is the right course. Accordingly, I will unfortunately be unable to continue in my capacities as a staff trainer and manager here at the Black Box into the New Year.

The past 2+ years I have spent at CrossFit NYC, along with a year and a half as a trainer and 9 months as a manager have been fantastic. I have said for a long time that if not for the Black Box, I'd have packed up and left NYC long ago. The community here has been a wonderful thing to be a part of and it has been, to say the least, a privilege to be trusted to coach and help shape the direction the community is going. I've gotten to watch several members grow into formidable athletes. I've gotten the pleasure of watching every day people take down personal goals and prove to themselves that they are stronger than they thought. And I've had the personal edification of developing into the athlete I am today -- something I'm not certain would have happened anywhere else.

I'm thankful for the community for allowing me to be part of it. To the owners (Hari, Court, Josh) for hiring me and trusting me with the "red headed step-child" that is CFBK and giving me the best job I've had to date. To my fellow trainers; past, present, and the new guard. And lastly, I'm thankful for the members of the Black Box, who have been a source of constant guidance, inspiration, and strength for me through what has been, to put it lightly, a formative and extremely important period in my life. I will endeavor to do everyone proud, and will strive to not be a stranger.

Torch,

Thank you for what you have done at Black Box and for all you will do for our country.

Torch, when is your last day officially? One of my goals (ten deadhang pullups) will hopefully be accomplished before you leave. Would like you to witness it.

Torch, it's impossible to be a better trainer than you. It's possible to be equal, but impossible to be better. I regularly use advice that you gave me in only the three or four WODs of yours that I was lucky enough to attend. (To name only one example, on cleans I think about getting to full extension as quickly as possible, not only jumping as high as possible.) It makes me feel a little safer to know that someone like you is going to Marine Corps OCS. I hope that some day you're Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, or President. Torch for President. Keep up the great work.

hoorah torch.

Congrats Torch! We will all miss you!

Good on ya with the persistence in getting accepted Torch. I don't know how many of you know this, but Torch, while a physical specimen and outstanding human being, was rebuffed on several attempts to attend OCS due to administrative BS. I wish I could tell you it gets better on that front, but hurry up and wait might as well be your new mantra. Its a huge deal to be accepted, and a great journey to embark on. OCS will be fun in the end, I promise. I look forward to welcoming you to the gun club on commissioning day.

Congratulations Torch!
We wil all miss you!

Torch,

You have inspired many people through CFNYC and CFBK and you've done it in a humble and selfless way.

We often undervalue just how important inspiration is in all our lives... Your contribution has been huge.

Your hard won lessons from Crossfit will pay massive dividends as you take on this new challenge. Remember this community you have been a part of building, it will serve you well, just as you have served it.

Semper Fidelis.

K

Torch,
In the past year you've made a significant impact on my development both as an athlete and more recently as a coach.
Thank you for all you've done here and for all you will do for our country.
Congratulations again!

Torch thank you for everything. Good luck and stay safe

From elements on, thank you for inspiring me in crossfit and teaching me to always push harder, when you get to the limit, keep going.

Congrats, Torch. Our loss is OCS's gain, and ultimately we will all gain from your service.
Lisa

Great work, Torch. Congrats and Godspeed.

Torch:

Congratulations! I know how much you've been looking forward to this. Glad to have had the chance to work with you. Best of luck.

Court, Josh, and I are discussing two ideas related to the membership increase scheduled for January 1:

1) We are considering allowing current members who buy a six-month membership before the end of the year to buy subsequent six-month memberships at the same rate (i.e., the six-month rate would not go up for those who buy and maintain this type of membership).

For example, someone who buys an $800 six-month membership ($133 per month) now to cover them from, say, January 15 through June 15, would then be able to buy again within 14 days of June 15 for the same $800, as opposed to the $1000 ($167 per month) six-month rate that will be in effect after January 1.

Effectively, we would be “grand fathering” current members who buy six-month memberships, so long as they continue to renew and not let their membership lapse. We would not have a similar program for monthly memberships.

(Note: We do allow people to suspend their six-month membership when they travel or are injured; this does not count as a lapse. We do not give refunds on the six-month membership.)

2) We are considering using some of the additional proceeds from the rate increase to open the Manhattan Location for seven or eight hours on Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM, with four WOD classes (probably at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM) and a Beginner Class at 10:00 AM. During the other hours, we would have “open gym” time, allowing members to schedule private training, practice, make up WOD’s, etc. If this approach proves popular, we might expand it to Brooklyn on either Saturday or Sunday.

Our objective is to provide maximum value to our members. We are aware that there are areas where we can improve, and we are listening to your suggetions, whether they are conveyed to us personally, through our coaching staff, through the blog, or through the grapevine

Please post comments on these two proposals.

Torch!
Thanks for the countless times you corrected my form or coached me during a workout. Truly, a big part of the community in NYC; you will be missed!!

Stay alert, stay alive,

- Ian

Good Luck with everything Torch. Thanks for all your contributions to the Box and more importantly, your service to our country.

Hari,
I think both of these ideas are great. I would be much more likely to buy the 6 month membership at this rate and also knowing you can suspend the membership for travel, etc. Also open hours sounds great too.

Hari, those are two excellent ideas which I personally would take full advantage of. Thank you for considering them.

Hari,
Those are great ideas.
It would definitely get me to consider getting a 6 month membership before the end of the year.

And more time than the current 3 hour window on Saturday would be amazing!

Hari,

Both of those proposals sound great to me! Looking forward to later classes on Saturdays and Sundays.

Hi Hari,

I think those ideas are great. I'm planning on buying another 6-mo membership before the end of the year.

I'm also very interested in going to early classes on Saturdays. I work on the weekends and sometimes the 11am class is too late for me.

Thanks for giving us more options!

Congratulations to Torch to be accepted into the OCS.

Looking forward to 2010.

Congratulations and good luck Torch.

Made up yesterday's 5k.

Torch, congratulations! You're a keen-eyed coach and we'll miss you greatly.

Hari, thanks for the rate extension and the expanded hours. I'd already planned on renewing my 6-month membership early and I'm glad that I don't have to secure the rate by paying for a full year, even though I'll probably end up buying another 6 month round when that time comes up. Very much appreciated.

Good luck Torch!!

I have discovered an impeccable site for shoe lifts and would like to share it with your readers, hopefully this is allowed?

Being short is no crime, if everybody else around you is taller, it is obvious you would desire to appear taller too.

Heel lifts are wedge-shaped inserts that fit in the heel part of a shoe, with the intention of adding lift under one or both feet for therapeutic reasons. People who endure foot pain whilst wearing shoes for an extended time. Shoe inserts can alleviate pain. Heel lifts are also perfect for people who want to increase their height.

Good Day. I believe that all government is evil, and that trying to improve it is largely a waste of time. Help me! Help to find sites on the: Discovery channle store. In the desire point out, you will find a great deal of “tricks” that assist with clearness and vividness. The best way would be to just consider a minute to consider it all in; the scenery, the feeling, every thing. But when this doesn’t function for you personally, or you would like that “Extra Push”, here are all the other great ones. Rubbing your hands is the most typical, getting within the habit of rubbing your hands with each other once you et lucid is really a truly great way to create your dreamscapes clearer. Spinning around also assists, as it assists if you really feel your self waking up, and is simply as vital as rubbing your hands together inside a lucid dream*. An additional typical tool utilized to raise clarity, vividness, manage, and general lucidity is merely yelling, “Increase Clarity/ Vividness/ Control/ Lucidity NOW!!?!!”. You may also spend a go to towards the Lucid Crossroads (http://www.lucidcrossroads.co.uk/gettingus.htm begin on this page and then go to description 1, then a couple of, then three), which, also, can help increase lucidity and will help in dream sharing and astral projection (in case you think in such), plus it's a kick @ss dreamscape.

Shoes lifts sometimes referred to as heel lifts. Shoe lifts originated from "elevator shoes". The earliest manufacturers of elevator shoes found it hard to manufacture as wide a range of styles as those available in normal shoes. Customers asked for something a little less obtrusive like an insert to put in normal footwear to make them seem taller.
