Feeling Restless?

| | Comments (32)

Since late spring, our membership has grown by 25%. This has not been obvious over the summer, but some time in the next week or so, we are likely to notice some overcrowding in our classes. We've been through this before, and the solution now will be the same as it has been in the past: add more WOD classes.

As soon as practical, we will be adding a 7:30 PM WOD class on Monday through Thursday. Currently, that time slot is devoted to an Elements Workshop on Monday and Wednesday and to Beginners' classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Effective Monday, September 21, we will no longer have a 7:30 PM Monday-Wednesday Elements Class (it will move to 9:00 PM). If things get too crowded, we will start the 7:30 PM WOD Class on September 21; but if possible, we will delay one more week until September 28, by which time we will have completed the current Tuesday-Thursday 8:30 PM Elements and be able to move the Beginners' Classes into that time slot.

As we gauge demand, we will determine whether to add a 6:30 WOD on Friday. If either the morning or afternoon classes get too busy, we will adjust as needed.

It is likely that we will be running the evening classes on a "first come, first served" basis, with Sara, our operations manager, acting as the final arbiter. What this means is that if by 5:55 twelve people have signed in for the 6:00, the thirteenth person to arrive may need to wait until the 6:30 class (depending on the logistics of that day's WOD). To date, this has almost never happened, and we anticipate that it will occur only rarely; however, if we get a "Fight Gone Bad" or similarly popular WOD in September, it's going to be a challenge. Please be patient.

We have worked our way through several growth spurts in the past, and we will do so again this fall. As always, our focus will be on the quality of our coaching. Please be patient while we continue to grow.

September 12 Black Box Games are partially canceled. (Full refunds for those who registered.)

Instead, we will be running a 10:00 AM and 12:00 Noon "A" Black Box WOD and a 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM "B" Black Box WOD. These two WOD's will be run close to "competition standards" (with minimal time coaching and maximum time judging).

The hardcore will be able to do the "A" WOD around 10:00 AM and the "B" WOD around 2:00 PM. (So those wanting to simulate a partial Game day will go first before the "A" class and last after the "B" class, allowing a few hours of rest in between).

(Makeup WOD's from the previous cycle will be only at 11:00 AM, and may be on a limited basis, since the focus will be on the "A" and "B" WOD's.)

We will be keeping accurate score and posting the results. We will indicate who did one and who did both WOD's.

There will be no extra charge for Black Box Members. Visitors are welcome and will pay the normal $20 drop-in rate for each WOD they do.

If any of our coaches are available to volunteer for judging the "A" and/or "B" WOD's please let us know.

Who is in for the Saturday 10:00 AM "A" WOD (i.e., who is doing both WOD's on Saturday)?

I was really hoping for an 8:30pm or 9pm WOD. I am frequently not out of work in time for the 8pm. And even when I am I feel rushed.

As an alternative, and since the gym will now be staffed later for the beginners and elements classes anyway, would you reconsider re-starting the free "open gym" time for Level I and other experienced members?

Honestly, what finally caused me to sign up for elements a year and a half ago was the post below, which mentioned open gym and a new location 2 blocks from my house.

Things happen, and neither of those items ended up as expected, which is fine, but some of us have been pretty patient already.

did the clean/jerk workout from sat. but did 5x3 instead of 7x1

Hey Justin, not sure if you're still on vacation but just wanted to make sure you caught that game last night ... you know, the one where the Canes beat FSU!

I would attend a 9:00 WOD if available...is there any way to keep Elements at 7:30, and have the WOD at 9:00 on Mon.-Wed. instead?

I agree with Joe about the later classes. While getting out even later in the evening isn't ideal, it seems adding a later class would hit the capacity problem by spacing out demand more evenly than adding another resource-consuming class between two existing classes. A 7:30 class seems to be more likely to overlap with both the 7:PM and the 8:PM classes, where an 8:30 would only overlap with the 8:00.

Regardless of the timeslot, thanks to the Black Box leadership for listening to our needs and adding the class.

Thanks again Jacinto!

I'd like to chime in that 7:30, 8:30, and even 9 would be fantastic for me due to my recent career switch. Unless I can talk Jacinto into running a 4am class, late evenings are my only chance to feed my crossfit addiction. Between the three, 8:30 is the most useful as it extends the window of crossfitting time a tad, but also means I could concievably still be asleep by 10. Yay options!!

I agree with Joe and Sara. 8:30 and/or 9 WODs would be much appreciated, as would open gym time for certified and other experienced members (even though this wouldn't apply to me yet).

I, personally, really like the idea of an "open gym" in the evenings.

Is there CFE tonight at Central Park??

Thanks

MP

If there was a 9pm or 930 class, I would attend on a regular basis.

At my last job I often couldn't get out in time to make a 8PM WOD class - even though I was only at 30th and Park. Or, as I choose to remember it, the corner of hellspelledbackwards.

I'm Interviewing around now, but due to the industry I anticipate the later hours of working to continue, and I'll probably not be lucky enough to be so close. So I put a vote in for a later WOD as well. 8:30 PM or 9PM would obviously be a pain for whoever has to staff them, but it'd mean staying on the good side of slave-driving employers.

I am brand new to the Box and was curious if anyone has given any thought to running an earlier WOD class. For those of us that like to get our workouts in early it would be nice to have a class that gets wraps up before 8am so that we might have time to run home and get ready.

I'm good with WODs anytime from 5:30pm onward. During the summer, 6:30 was the earliest I could make it due to summer hours, but now I'm out at 5 and often have other events scheduled later in the evening. So I hope the 5:30 WOD stays as is.

This might limit the free beginner classes a little, but what if they focused on bodyweight exercises and were held out in a park? If you had a small banner, you'd be advertising Crossfit and keeping them out of the way at the same time. I don't think all the beginner classes should be in the park (after all, they'd probably want to see the gym itself if they're serious). I'm just brainstorming.

In most scheduling changes, there are winners and losers. However, in this instance, as far as our members are concerned, the proposed change is pareto optimal." (An outcome of a game is Pareto optimal if there is no other outcome that makes every player at least as well off and at least one player strictly better off.)

Under the current proposal, we are not eliminating any WOD classes (i.e., no one is any worse off) but we are adding a class (making at least some people better off).

In reality, the people who may be made worse off are the Beginners and Elements Students who need to move from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Also some of the coaches may me worse off, as well. From here, we need to decide whether there is a further tradeoff (that makes some better off and some worse off).

Specifically, we need to decide whether it makes sense to swap the 8:30 PM Elements and Beginners' Classes with the 8:00 PM WOD. This would create a later option that some of you are requesting, but it would eliminate an option as well. If we go this route, some people who miss the 7:30 PM WOD will need to wait until 8:30. (Of course, we have exactly this situation now with people who miss the 7:00 PM WOD and need to wait until 8:00 PM).

All in all, these are good problems to have. I am aware of very few affiliates that have anywhere near the number of WOD classes as we have at Black Box.

My instinct is to add the 7:30 PM WOD at the end of the month, and then, find out whether there is a concensous for moving the 8:00 PM WOD to 8:30 PM.

Your thoughts?

Run/Burpee WOD as rx'd, 37:52

I enjoyed today's kettlebell WOD at lunchtime under Court's excellent tutelage. I finished in 5:03 which means I used a MUCH too light KB (12#) so I did some practise cleans and presses with a 35# kb afterwards.
The warmup exercises using rings (pikes, pushups and split squats) worked well without being too taxing.

Just my $.02

I think the dynamic of having beginner's witness wod's in the thick of the evening chaos is a really special thing.

With them standing there in awe...I get motivated to impress them. Not sure if anyone else feels the same way, but I'm proud of our bustle we have on some nights...

Totally agree with Gabe. From a business standpoint, having a full WOD going on while they're getting their first taste is a great free marketing opportunity. We are our strongest advertisement.

Hari,
From the comments here, 8:30 seemed to be a popular option and it would smooth demand. Moving the 8 has some merit.

Yes, Bari, I did catch the game and it was a great one that unfortunately the same Noles that have been around for the past 9 years decided to shit the bed. So congrats to your Canes!

Hey all you CFNYC-ers! Thought some of you might be interested in the lifting intensives we're running at the Brooklyn Barbell Club.

We've got a Starting Strength class beginning tomorrow (Wednesday September 9th) -- 3 months of 3x a week deadlifting / back squatting / pressing / power cleaning to get you super strong!

On September 22nd we start our 3 month Olympic Lifting intensive -- designed to perfect your snatch / clean & jerk form.

Classes are capped at 12 people, but we still have a couple spaces left in each one! Sign up here: http://www.brooklynbarbell.com/register

In re Pareto Optimal, I'm not really sure you're on point. However, that's not really germane to this discussion.

As a guy who has work responsibility from 8AM to 10PM, there's not an overwhelming amount of sympathy (nothing personal) for people having to work long hours.

That being said, and in a more collegial spirit, some people are morning people and want to be able to hit a workout, go to work, and then be asleep by 9PM. Other people are not, and try to sleep in until the last possible moment, go to work, go to the gym, then do additional work, and then try to be asleep by 12AM.

People have different preferences and work schedules which are as variegated as each xfitter. I'm sure that self selection pushes most of the early birds into jobs/lifestyles that fit and vice versa, so I find it amusing to be told that I should try to "get up and go in the morning." It is, at best not very realistic and at worst somewhat disrespectful (not, I stress, intentionally) and generally about as helpful as saying "just go to sleep later."

I do feel that currently I am at a relative disadvantage with the current class schedule and have mentioned this quite openly. The decision to not have an 8:30 or later WOD actually increases my dis-utility by increasing the supply of WODs that I cannot use at the expense of WODs I could use.

The point being that there is not an inexhaustible supply and perfect fungibility of WODs, wherein I would be neutral to such additional (and infinite) classes. In fact, it has been presented as an either/or situation (apart from general temporal constraints - days are not infinite), which in turn presents me with a lower allocation of WODs. A move in this manner away from equilibrium necessarily takes from one party and gives to the other.

CFFB WOD in BK

21, 15, 9 reps of
Power Snatch 115 lbs (scaled from 135 since that would've been really ugly)
Bench Press 185 lbs
Box Jump 24"

14:44
Muscle failure on bench press in the last 2 rounds was the most limiting factor.

Hari - I'm planning to do both WODs on Saturday

made up the Total

squat 370, 5lbs pr
press 180, -5
deadlift, 445 -20

total 995, pr is 1010

not thrilled. deads felt really heavy today.

Adam,

"A move in this manner away from equilibrium necessarily takes from one party and gives to the other."

We are not taking away from anyone. There has never has been a WOD class after 8:00 PM. You have never been in your preferred equilibrium.

In theory, we can make you better off by adding a later WOD (and we may); however adding a 7:30 PM WOD at this time can in no way make you or any other member worse off.

Made up the Run/Burpee WOD...
subbed 400 m rows on the erg and finished in 26:03.

As per the comment that not many affiliates have as many classes as CFNYC - I do have something to say about that.

Having looked at some affiliates around the area, very few offer classes past 7:30PM.

So, although I don't pretend to know much about business, it seems like adding more later classes to the schedule might potentially tap into a group of people who had been shut out of other CF options due to availability... whereas adding more classes into the 5:30 - 7:30PM timeframe wouldn't. If you're looking to spread out the overcrowding that is already happening, that would be bad. But if you're looking to continue growing the membership, it'd probably be more effective.
