First day back after a LONG time in Africa. Won't bore you all with an update of workouts, but have been trying to keep up as best possible - throwing in some Jacinto travel workouts when I couldn't do the WOD that day.
Great to see Jacinto and the morning posse!
Made up "JT":
*subbed dips on paralettes - shoulder still healing

Then raced Anthony in a 2k row.
Did everyone know that you can wirelessly link the C2s and race? VERY cool.

REST DAY DINNER THIS FRIDAY
Who is in? I'm still considering between venues.
I teach until 8:45 on the UES, but I'd like to come for some late rest-day action.
I just wanted to leave a comment and say thanks (again) to Jacinto and Keith for having me last Thursday. I'm going to try to do a few more squat days every week and implement what Jacinto and Keith taught me - hopefully I'll see the gains and changes that I was looking for. 30 minutes of training won't make me perfect but hopefully it'll get me on the right path.
Thanks again to everyone at the Black Box for having me. :)
I have been absent for a couple of weeks between work craziness and vacation, but I am in for rest day dinner on Friday. See the 7 a.m. crew tomorrow!
Assuming your summer/rest day reading list has already included:
Masterng the Zone--- Barry Sears
The Paleo Diet-- Loren Cordian
Starting Strenght- Mark Rippetoe
It has been suggested that I read Pride Prejudice and Zombies:

Hello all,
I am new to CF and enjoying myself thus far, but this article has left me with several doubts and concerns. Can some of the more experienced members comment?
http://slavenation.com/index.php/2009/07/23/cultfit/
Regards,
OP
Oliver, just come in and try it.
That site is a joke, and the article is not even worth commenting on.
That article:
bogus and/or legit critiques, it's all been said before, but this time we get added misogyny and homophobia! Great!
Oliver, Hope that didn't come across as too asshole-ish
If you share your specific doubts and concerns on here, I think you'll get a lot of intelligent discussion with which to form your own opinion. There's just too much drivel in that article to subject people to.
Oliver,
I agree wholeheartedly with both of Brett's comments. The article has too much shit to even focus on what to address first.
He has a good point at the end though -- make up your own mind. Come in, try the program for a while -- see how you look, feel, perform, etc. Then decide what you think.
That article was a struggle to get through. And considering I've made it through no less than seven New York Times articles referencing Julia Child already today, that says something.
I agree with Brett. It's easier to respond if you clarify what kind of doubts and concerns the article raised in you.
My take away - there's nothing to worry about if your capable of individual thought. Within the realm of crossfit, or anything, there will be people who choose not to think for thesmelves. However, I've found that most people at the box are fully capable of thinking critically and that there are hosts of different perspectives within the realm of working towards an increased quality of life through diet & exercise. Stop by. Engage. Run your own field tests. Reach your own conclusions.
Personally, I just like to be around other people who are striving.
Right now we have 13 for the competition at BBB on sat. Am I missing anyone? Anyone else interested?
Craig
Nikki G
Craig Cinci
Brett NYC
Aaron A
Kelly
CA
Ryan B
Mike N
Davi
Sara
Gavin
Sophie
If you don't want me to compete, just say it Craig. ;-)
You had me on the first list, but I've fallen off the last 2 rounds or so. I'm down for it and planning on being there Saturday.
What time does the competition start?
The plan is to start at 10 o'clock at McCarren park for a park WOD or two before finishing back at BBB
Oliver,
For a cult to succeed, it actually needs to make an effort to recruit people. We spend zero on marketing and zero on advertising. We offer no incentive to our members for referring in new people. We don't require or offer contracts. We are getting close to capacity at our Manhattan location, and we will probably cap our membership by the end of the year.
I am not willing to write a complete rebuttal to the article. (As an owner, I don't want your business enough to spend an hour deconstructing that entire diatribe). On the other hand, if you have a specific question, please feel free to ask, and I'll be happy to respond.
Somehow this didn't make it on the blogs: yesterday was Gabe K's birthday. Happy Birthday Gabe!!!
Also, CFE NYC Wednesday morning at the same 6:45am time slot.
Crossfit is harder than your mom!
Today
Burpee/DL WOD
5 rds
5 DL #275
10 Burpees
rx'd: 5:54 (not a PR by a stretch)
Thanks Torch!
and I won the Carnegie Deli Pickle Eating Contest today!!!
I heard there is supposed to be video of that, Gabe...
Congrats and happy birthday!
The strongest critique of @fit is that the winners of the games do not follow the wod.
Happy Birthday Gabe and congrats on the pickle triumph!
Happy Birthday Gabe! and congrats on the contest.
Also that dude front squatting with vertical forearms up top is gonna break his wrists if he ever buts weight on the bar with that form.
Alfie, that photo is two years old. He is no longer a member. He is performing a thruster. And we have had people break their wrists before, so we are well aware of that potential.
Further: i follow the main page. I also posted the top time on the main page for DT last week. So I can tell from experience that is does something.
Many of the top CrossFit athletes intermittently follow the main page with cycles of specific supplementing. If you don't believe this, ask the women who have placed in the last two years. Don't only look at the men.
Lastly, as much as I appreciate arm-chair lurker-coaching, I don't respect it. Step into the gym, or keep the snyde thing wherever you choose to work out or not work out.
If anyone has kettlebells for sale, please e-mail me at the above address. Thanks in advance.
Re: Rest day dinner... likely to be in Manhattan? That's easiest for me and I'm definitely in if so. If not, still might come. Just putting in a bid for convenience while you're still considering venues. :)
Alfie Moore,
"The strongest critique of @fit is that the winners of the games do not follow the wod."
Even if you are correct, this is like saying the strongest critique of Harvard is that Bill Gates dropped out.
happy birthday Gabe! and congrats
I just wanted to mention that I had the opportunity to attend a seminar on shoulder health/anatomy at Crossfit South Brooklyn on Sunday. David and his crew welcomed me with open arms and I learned so much about the shoulders and their functional roles while Crossfitting!
Also learned a great warm up/rehab series of movements for the rotator cuff which most everyone found helpful, which I will start to use after my WODs.
Seriously, there are lots of events and seminars happening over at CFSBK which is open to the entire Crossfit community. I can't recommend attending one of these sessions enough; it was informative and fun.
Happy birthday Gabe.
Made up JT today w/ kirk and anthony
10:13 rx
Made up the back squats, barefoot today.
315, 335, 355, 365 shallow, 365 miss, 365 Tie PR, 370 fail
Squats w/ Brett:
315, 335, 355, 365, 375(f), 375(f), 370(f)
Almost had the two at 375. Couldn't stand them up all the way. Just tired for the 370 lift.
Did 5x5 back squats at 225 to work on unlearning all the bad form habits I have on that lift.
Kinda wanted to do JT, but my shoulders were feeling it from the gymnastics cert this wknd, so I'll catch that one next time.
The gymnastics cert was absolutely excellent! Tucker is an awesome coach and I learned a ton of stuff. There's one in LIC in Novemeber too.
If you are even remotely interested, I would highly reccommend signing up. If anyone is curious about it or has questions, feel free to ask.
KJ, I love your comment about wanting to be around strivers. Working out at a CF affiliate is like taking an advanced placement class and working out at a Globo gym is like study hall.
Avery, I want to learn that rotator cuff warm-up--let's make that happen ASAP!
Happy Birthday Gabe!
Did two WODs today:
JT - 20:19 used 2x25 lb weights for HSPU (5,4)
Squats - Went light to work on form. Did a ladder of 3-5 reps of 45, 95, 115, 135, 115, 95 and 45. (6,4)
Happy Birthday Gabe!!!! :)
Happy birthday, Gabe!
Made up back squats:
185
205
215
220
225
230 (f)
230 (f)
Form and fatigue issues still preventing me from beating my 225 PR. Thanks to Dan and all the other guys for form tips and spotting.
Then I decided to make up JT after squats. 23:32 with 1 ab mat on HSPUs. First time doing a ring dip WOD without the skinny purple band. Thanks to Tony and Mike for pushing me.
Fight Gone Bad should feel great tomorrow after my make up enthusiasm today.
