If you can, bring a hand towel for use in towel pullups, the most effective rope climb sub.

It looked tough on paper. It was even tougher to do.

Used 135lbs and switched to jumping towel pullups in round 3.
Definitey was harder than it sounded.

Am I the only person in the universe who wants to WOD at 4 pm on a Saturday? I just finished teaching.
I don’t wanna do it by myself! Or break someone/something in the regular gym.
    :(
    boo!

52:54 Sub 105 lbs, 6 8-foot rope climbs per round
    (55,42)
First time using a rope. Probably not the best WOD to start with. Cannot recall a more depressing WOD experience. Mentally crushed from begining to end. Goal was simply to finish.

  • Levi

Went out to the BBB for the WOD.
Sub 118# hang squat cleans and 15 single-ring pullups per round.

Going to attempt this at the gym. Thinking perhaps I should sub pull-ups as I don’t have a good idea in my mind of what I’d do with a hand towel.
If anyone happens to check this thing in the next hour and have words of wisdom, please post them here.
I can get a towel from the gym. I can find a bar to attach it to. Unless it is a very long towel, I’m a little unclear about how this will possibly translate to a 15′ rope climb. unless I climb the towel, jump off, climb again, etc…?
Perhaps I’ll just sub 15 pull-ups or something.
    hmmm.

    Davi,
    Towel Pullup —
Take your towel and drape it over your pullup bar with half the towel hanging over each side of the bar…i.e. centered. Grab one end of the towel with each hand. Get a nice tight grip and pull, just like a regular pullup. It’s tough to kip with these, but it’s somewhat doable. The normal standard for pullups is chin over the bar, which is where your hands are, obviously, during standard bar pullups. With the towel pullup, just be sure your chin gets above your hands on each pull.
That’s basically it, you can string pullups together just like typical deadhang pullups. Just get full extension at the bottom.
In class today people subbed 7 towel pullups per ascent instead of 15. It’s up to you, but be warned that towel pullups are hard as hell. They will fry your grip quickly.
Have fun. Feel free to call if you still have questions.

Or just youtube it, I’m sure you can find examples.

    WOD at Potomac CF
    5 rounds
    1 min row for calories
    1 min press, 95#
    2 min rest
The presses were so much more difficult than I thought they’d be.

    16:55 Rx’D. By Rx’D I mean I used 155# for the squat cleans and went up Brooklyn’s 12′ rope 4 times per rd (48′ rather than 45′).

  • Kevin P

Great work today BBB crew. Amazing job Torch. Thanks for pushing me.
    28:15 Rx’d (plus?)
158# squat cleans. Half the reps were power cleans that I slowly rode down into the squat cause my right hip was killing me. I usually love cleans but today was not my day.
Rope climbs 4 ascents 12ft rope all legless done at the BBB.
This was the easier part this time around compared to last time I did this.

Wowie! That sure was fun! cough.
~18:43 (give or take – by my lonesome at the gym – I almost asked the stray trainer watching TV to come over and watch me instead ’cause I suspected it would motivate me, but he disappeared for a bit)
started with 105#, failed pretty quickly
dropped down to 95#, failed again
settled on 85# and started over
subbed 7 dead hang towel pull-ups per round, only one ascent (omg! I didn’t realize it was supposed to be THREE ascents per round, I wrote it down incorrectly in my book – I totally failed to scale properly!)
that was, indeed, a grip killer … I think if I were to do it again I’d do 15X3 of jumping or something like that…
Anyhow, my cleans are DIRTY. :(

  • Davi

also, I totally grabbed both ends of the towel with both hands together
I tried a few with one hand on each end and decided that was too easy and thus had to be wrong
