"Crossfit has been able to get women who would never see themselves as lifters to lift weights"
And you thought burpees were bad... Say hello to the "maneater"
Perfect game show for crossfitters to compete in?
Kettlebellin' for strength
Steroids: the benefits are permanent, the ban should be, too
Cake torture
Coach Josh explains it all
In our final installment of "Pullup Week," I wanted to talk just a minute about the metaphysical implications of being able to do an unassisted pullup. I'm convinced that what feels so amazing about your first pullup is that you're literally pulling your own weight. Humans want to feel important, necessary, capable, and able. Every time you go for a pullup, you either get up there or you don't. And then your response to that fact says a lot about you--do you keep trying if you didn't get up there? And if you did get up there, are you satisfied or do you want more reps and/or to be able to lift more weight?

How is the maneater different from the manmaker?
Also, does anybody want to try this (100 muscle ups, partnered) with me?

Maneater = Manmaker, except maybe the distinction between doing a clean-> thruster, whereas in manmaker you can do a clean and jerk or whatever, so long as you get it overhead (or at least that's what I've always believed, maybe incorrectly).
***That gameshow was jacked from a Japanese one, which I have to say, is much more hilarious!!!

Fun times this AM with Jacinto and the Posse - few new faces, which was cool.
Subbed 60 jumping Muscle Ups
16:29
Still brutal.
"Cooled down" by doing 56 burpees. Fun, fun, fun.
Can't wait for the WOD tonight...love me some muscle ups.
Jeff, I would be down for doing that challenge with you. Were you thinking of doing it tonight in place of this WOD? Or just sometime in the near future?
If we do it tonight I will need to find a time to make up the 30 sometime soon -- it's been a while since I did 30 for time (missed the August WOD) and I'm curious to see where I stand.
Let me know.
Zach
If you're planning on doing 30 tonight, then we can do this another time. I'm not sure where my workout plans are taking me tonight yet anyway. Also, I have 4 hand tears from kettlehell, so even though muscle ups chafe mostly at the wrists, it might be safe for me to let these holes dry up a bit.
Here's my pullup anecdote.
I bought a 2 pood bell a while back and was just barely able to get it down from my office and into a cab. It was so freaking heavy that I could barely do 5 swings when I got home. Over the last few months though, I've been using it here and there and can now do 21 swings easily, about 15 snatches, and I can also press it 5 times. Needless to say, my pullup numbers have also gone up. I feel stronger on the bar and the "gotta let now" point comes a few reps later.
The moral is to keep really heavy stuff around the house and you'll get stronger. I'm going to miss today's wod.
Once again to go off topic, I'm moving out of my old apartment this weekend and still have two good futons, a coffee table, a really comfy ikea chair with ottoman,a bakers rack, a ikea desk and nightstand that I'm donating, but if anyone is in need of any of this and can pick it up this weekend, I'll set it aside and you can get it from my old apartment (Amsterdam Ave., b/t 159 & 160th) on Sat/Sun. Last call.

What Josh neglected to mention in his post was his WICKED work this morning on Muscle Ups! It was impressive.
Here's another eating question for the CFNYC community - What does everyone think of supplements? Do you take any, or not? If yes, what?
At the very least I've been meaning to get some Omega 3 action going on, but I know there are MANY other possibilities.
Would love to hear what people are thinking and doing.

Jeff,
I am okay with waiting for your hands to heal. Besides, it might be easier to coordinate that 100 muscle up team WOD sometime to do out in Brooklyn -- I feel like we'd be less in the way there, at least.
Also, it could be cool to see if multiple people want to do it--i.e. two or three teams all going at it (how many rings are in Brooklyn?) as sort of a friendly little gesture of competition...
Kirk,
Glassman seems to advocate fish oil (but not flax) pretty heavily. I take my one swig each morning.
The only other things I take are ZMA and 5-HTP before bed, because Robb Wolf says it's good for sleep.
I used to pump myself full of creatine, hemodilators, and the whole nine-yars back when I was doing regular lifting. I remember the day I stopped it all, I didn't notice a difference.
Glutamine is pretty well respected too, if you're going to take anything.
i was taking some L-glutamine but i stopped prematurely when i thought it wasn't really helping. Do you recommend any specific brands of this supplement?
hey all you beautiful crossfitnyc people. totally off topic, but i wanted to invite everyone to a showcase tonight. it is set up as a competition with 5 singer/songwriters and the audience votes for the winner (aka whomever has the most guests) and if i win, i get to headline at "don't tell mama's" and i get all kinds of other cool stuff.
so, come out tonight and vote for me so i can get famous already!
love you all!
Kirk-
regarding the fish oil (EFA's, omega-3) by all indications they work exceedingly well at reducing all sorts of inflammatory responses in the body and nearly everyone should take them but as Coach Glassman mentions in one of his nutritional lectures, for one group of people they work too well, namely anyone going into a combat theater. Omega-3s do a great job of stopping the blood from clotting, which is awesome if you're a 50-something sedentary desk-jockey trying to avoid a heart attack, but terrible if you're a soldier going into the line of fire and you want your blood to clot around, just as an example let's say, a bullet wound...so you would want to dial back your dosage a few weeks prior to travel to one of those exciting places.
Something to consider.
Well put on the EFA's Court. Personally, I sort of like Udo's 3-6-9 blend (2:1:1 ratio). It is derived from a mix of flax seed oil, coconut oil, rice bran oil, lecithin, and some others. The mix is a pretty good balance, I find, as a lot of studies suggest not taking all EFA's in from any single source.
In terms of Glutamine, I'm a fan of MHP's Glutamine-SR.
what if fish oil , makes you breakout.
is the udo's a good alternateive?
Thanks for the points, guys.
I've looked at ZMA and Glutamine and will continue to research.
I'm pretty much decided on the EFAs/Omega 3 - I appreciate the comments on the possibilities. Fish oil seems to be more supported currently than the other options. I see Dr. Sears is keen on it as well...
Court, key info on Omega-3s working "too well"...I did not know that. In fact, I will pass that on to a few friends who do not know that either. None of us want some yahoo medic in the field filling us up full of military grade QuikClot because we're taking supplements! Freaky.
What about Creatine? Seems to get a lot of press as one of the most tested - and reliable - supplements. True?
Zach
I believe there are 4 sets of rings at BBB. I don't think that the limiting factor would be the rings, but the number of people who would be willing to do this.
Really, my partial reluctance to do this tonight has less to do with my palm tears and more to do with the fact that I just did the 30 muscle ups WOD on my own at the end of August. I doubt I'll have a significant time improvement (or any improvement at all, given my current level of conditioning) over last time and there are other things I should probably work on first.
3 caps of fish oil + 3 caps of faxseed oil + 1 multivitamin pill and that's it. And even the multivitamin I could do without as you get them from your daily intake of food (if you eat vegetables and fruits).
Unless you train like a dog, there's no need for any supplement at all. And even then, if you're really tired after a workout, the best recovery is rest and sleep.
The supplement industry is such a giant hoax. Most of the time there's no scientific basis behind these products (except some phony MD who got paid $$$ to endorse them) and if they had to be approved by the FDA, none of them would and the whole industry would be out business.
I heard creatine is not great on the liver. Is this true? Also, I have been taking three capsals day of fish oil consistently for a year and ran out two weeks ago. Believe it or not but I have had a bit of joint pain recently. It may very well be from past W0D's. Or it may be from not taking the fish oil.
Creatine is fine on the liver if you hydrate enough.
Creatine makes your muscles retain an astronomically higher amount of water than usual, thus you need to re-hydrate appropriately or your liver/kidneys won't be able to function.
I think you're supposed to run 6L of water a day when on the 'tene.
Honestly though, I took it for a while, then stopped, and noticed nothing. Shit's expensive too.
Be careful with flax. There is a threshold, and once you hit it, it's counter-productive to go past it. I avoid it all together.
See Glassman's lecture on nutrition from CFJ for more info.
Vitamin E is also something you want to avoid taking if you're in a situation where blood clotting is an issue. It also increases bleeding.
If you have surgeries scheduled, this is definitely something to eliminate 2 to 3 weeks beforehand.
I'm a problem bleeder (have been given coagulants after internal bleeding during a surgery) and avoid both Omega-3 and E.
4:58 as RX'd.
Not too satisfied with my time to be honest. Thought I would finish it at least faster than Grace.
12:30 sub 60 Jumping Muscle-ups
Felt like I was pulling more than jumping, but I leave others to comment on whether that was true or not. First time doing this workout, so any time is good. Should have done better though.
13:58 as rx'd - first time!!!
i have always come out of the gate too fast on this WOD and would reach failure after about 5-7 muscle ups. so, tonight i set out with the goal of pacing myself.
i could have gone faster, but now i know i can do it as rx'd and i did not miss a single muscle up.
