Happy Birthday to Brian D.! (his birthday was actually yesterday, but I know we get a lot more readers of the blog on a Monday than a Sunday)

Telling a friend she's fat: do you even go there?

Re: Articles about people being fat- I have considered the best way to counsel or talk to friends or family about weight issues, but haven’t come up with anything satisfactory. My own solution to being overweight, when I weighed roughly 40 pounds more than I do now with little appreciable strength, was to get angry at myself for being a worthless fat ass, so that I would eat better, exercise and remain focused.
However, I don’t think that this would be particularly useful approach for people I care about, since they would almost certainly dislike me for it and, worse yet, I don’t think it would work very well. I also don’t think the stock “Come to Crossfit” response is particularly effective, since this protocol scares away people who consider themselves fit, much less those who know they are not. This is one of the reasons that I really respect those that are struggling to make DFL in order to avoid the dreaded DNF.
What has worked for others before? When do you find it most likely to be able to effectively offer advice on nutrition or exercise? Do you point out certain books (Paleo, Zone, Pollan books, etc.)?
would you guys ever consider doing a wod class on the weekend, early morning(8 or 9), before the beginners class?
Chris,
In the past, we have tried running earlier WOD classes on the weekends, and the attendance was lower than at the current hour. Perhaps the situation has changed. How many people would prefer a 9:00 AM weekend WOD to the current 11:00 AM?
In the alternative, how many people would prefer to see us switch the 10:00 AM Beginners' Classes with the 11:00 AM WOD Classes on Saturday and Sunday?
Hari, how about an 8am weekday class?
Clearly, she didn't do all of her "tough trainer" homework for this one

Chris, Hari,
I think most people go out on Fri and Sat nights so I guess scheduling WODs at 8am or 9am the following day would not draw a lot of attendance. I actually think that even 10am is early on a Sat and Sun. Or maybe it's just me.
So I had my second sprint triathlon this weekend. And again I have to thank CrossfitNYC...
This time around, my training consisted of almost exclusively WODs. In the last two months I've been able to do only a handful of spinning classes and maybe gotten 5 hours of pool time. I hadn't gotten on an actual bike since my last race June 1st. The only consistent form of excercise since June 1st has been Crossfit.
Out of 549 men, I came in 38th. I did a 500 meter swim, 11.5 mile bike ride and a 3.1 mile run in 1:05:10. I even got an award for my age group (5th in men 25-29): http://www.lin-mark.com/njsprawards08.txt This is leaps and bounds better than my results in June. Forgoing "cardio" actually helped my time IMPROVE!
Crossfit continues to amaze me. You absolutely can not tell me that Crossfit doesn't translate to other fields. You can not tell me that anyone needs to do "cardio." And you can't tell me that this isn't the single best way to get physically fit. Thanks, of course, go to the entire Crossfit NYC community (NYC, BBB and Virtuosity). You all have brought me places I could never have imagined.
Ok, commercial over.
Good stuff Tom.
I was actually hoping the weekend WOD would be later. Like 2pm or 3pm. Or maybe if there were two, the early and late people would both be happy.
Awesome work, OT!
Nice work, OT! Glad to have you on our team.
Happy Birthday, Brian! How's school going?
This guy is tougher than all those other trainers:

What about scheduling a Sat/Sun morning 4am class? I would totally do a WOD on the way home from clubbing.
Happy Birthday, Brian!
Hey, Boston Oly cert people.
How is everyone planning on getting up to Boston? What time leaving on Friday...
I know Jack, Thor and I are planning to get there by bus. Just looked up the schedules on Bolt and Mega. See below. What do you think? We should all try to get on the same bus, if possible.

Great work, Tom! Awesome stuff.
Great to see everyone at lunch doing the Total!
300/135/355=790. I had to come in and shake some of the rust off my olympic lifts before going to the certs in August.
I'll be leaving for the Boston Oly cert by car from Fishkill. I'm not exactly sure when I'll be leaving. I still have to figure that part out.
My vote is for a later WOD on the weekend (2-3pm).
I've been better about making the 11am class, however, not being a morning person - especially on the weekend - it can be tough if I went out the night before...I like to sleep late.
As for the CFT: 645
Squat: 245
Press: 125
Dead: 275
I actually went down significantly from last CFT. Either with all the weight I've lost, I've also lost some strength or I just didn't eat my wheaties this morning.
Nice work today everyone!!
Burnt from work so my total sucked. Need to start a strength program ASAP or take a vacation or both!!
Squat 245
Press 145
Dead 295
Squat and dead down about 20-25 pounds each.
happy bday Brian!
no total today but worked out with Tyler and got a pr on my deadlift-up to 205. pretty psyched. failed at 210. like 40 times. hopefully next time.
thx Tyler.
Happy Birthday Brian! We miss you!

Shoulder Press -120 (same as PR)
Deadlift - 305 (PR but could have gone a lot heavier)
Total:667
Thanks Coach P for helping me start to conquer my squat fear.
Does anyone have any thoughts on Kurt's initial post on counselling overweight ppl. I would also be interested in hearing what people have to say here.
Guess I'll finally start posting.

Squat, 315,325,335-Fail
Press, 155,165,170
Dead, 405, 415, 420
Total 915
Squat, PR still 330lbs
Press, ties PR
Dead, new PR by 5 lbs
I was a Total virgin before tonight, and now I'm sore. Um...
Squat - 365
Press - 185
Deadlift - 415
CFT - 965
So close! But I'm glad to have benchmarks now, since I never really lifted for 1RMs. I struggled for that squat. The 185 on the press was easy, but I couldn't do even 5 pounds more than that (couldn't move the bar off the chest at all at 190). The deadlift was a pleasant surprise.
I hope to eke out 35 more lbs. next time... 10 in the press, 25 in the deadlift. I think that squat is as high as it's going to go for a while.
Hey Josh R
Stop by the Brooklyn Box more often on the weekends. Since we're running beginners class from 1-2, most of us are doing the WOD afterwards.
