Friday Rest Night Dinner
Friday Rest Night Dinner is tonight at 8:30pm at the Black Box, 39 West 38th Street. All members and Elements students are invited. An Elements Class will be going on until 9:00, so let's stay upstairs and out of the way until it ends. Pizza, beer, and wine will be provided.
Free Beginner Walk-In Classes
Will be every Saturday and Sunday Morning at 10:00 AM, beginning this weekend (at 39 West 38th Street).
Manhattan Update
We're in our temporary space and are here until we move to the permanent location. It's still a bit too soon to say precisely how long it will take to get into our permanent home. We'll know more over the next few weeks.
In the meantime, we'll be making some big upgrades to the temporary space: The loft will be ripped out over the next week. We will then lay down the flooring and the usable floor space will nearly double. A pull-up rack is being built (similar to the old one, but a few feet shorter, as the old one doesn't fit across the width of the space). It will be installed soon after the loft is gone. We're working on getting the air conditioning fixed.
Brooklyn Update
A committee of Black Box members interested in getting the Brooklyn location (817 Metropolitan Ave.) fully functional has been meeting regularly. They will be out there Saturday morning, taking stock of exactly what needs to be done, purchased, created, etc. If you're not already involved but would like to be, talk to Justin, Moon, or Sam. (We still need volunteers to remove the rest of the bodies from the basement.)
Con Ed has committed to being on site Friday morning to either turn on the electric or figure out exactly what it will take to do so soon. Getting power* is the starting point for everything. We are figuring out what we can spend on equipment; how and when we can staff WOD classes, walk-ins, and soon, Elements Workshops.
Given the overwhelming enthusiasm and willingness to volunteer expressed by (too many to list without risking missing someone) it is clear that the Brooklyn Box is going to succeed. The "bones" of the location are exceptional. It is probably every bit as good a space as the original CrossFit Santa Cruz location--maybe better. It just needs work and money. It will get both.
*In this instance, we need the (voltage x current) type of power, as opposed to the (force x distance / time) type of power.

As a heads up to the CFNYC crew:
Registration is open for the 2008 Urbanathlon. I did this race last year and Mike did it the year before that. It is an awesome combination of running, obstacle course and climbing a 7 World Trade Center (52 stories). It is the only race I know that requires you to hurdle a taxi cab and climb an 8 foot wall right before the finish.

I am definitely up for training, particularly those who want to train stairs. I did stair training beforehand and it REALLY helped me out getting up those 52 flights. As more than one near-collapse racer said "Stairmasters just don't cut it."

Brian D. - Nice post about the history of the penis. I respect your feelings on keeping your body private for the ones you love and trust. Unfourtunatly that doesn't really fall in line with some of the outfits I've seen you wear in the gym - spandex pants that don't leave much to the imagination and I've seen you go shirtless probably more times than any other guy at the box. Hypocritical.
Allison - Dispite how other people on this blog have interpreted my comment I was NOT implying that you're looks make you biased. Not at all.
What I did mean was that based on what I've heared you say about other women (particularily Jolie and her choice to wear a bikini and ugs ) and what I've seen you wear in the gym I think it's hypocritical for you to take such a strong stance on how women should represent themselves in that area.
You don't think it's appropriate for women to look cute or dress a certain way or have a certain amount of their bodies exposed. But then why on earth did you walk around the gym sporting nothing more than and spandex bra, shorts smaller than some of my underwear and knee high socks?? Not exactly a practical outfit for training based on what you've said.
I personaly don't care what anyone wears. I'm not offended by the human body.
What I am offended by are hypocrites. People who stand around casting judgement on other people. People who pick and choose what's right and wrong based on THEIR beliefs and then look down or shame other people who don't fall in line with what they think.
I'm also offended by people who are out of touch with reality - I'll say it one more time - looking good, posing for maxim or GQ for men or women does not make people any less of an athlete. It doesn't discredit their athletic acheievments. It seems like that's what you want to believe.
I never said all of this was about me but all of you are so quick to say "it's not all about you Allison". You just assumed I was on the deffensive for myself. Not true. You're absolutly right This Is Not About Me.
I'm not exactly sure why everyone was so quick to treat me like the enemy just because we don't have the same opinion about the role and treatment of women in the fitness industry. We obviously disagree and that's fine with me. But seriously you are so quick to attack my videos and cast judgement on what I do. You're not the moral authority. Don't you get that?

- Power Medley (Flip & Carry): Contestants flip a 900 lb. tire four times, followed by carrying a 385 lb. weight 50 feet to the finish line
- Eleiko Last Man Standing Deadlift: Contestants must dead lift an Eleiko Bar in 20 seconds, with the weight of the bar increasing each time, until there is one man left standing.
- Husafeld Stone Carry: Contestants lift and carry a 400 lb. "Husafeld Stone" as far as they can.
- Axle Lift (Clean & Press / Jerk): Contestants have one minute to lift a 300 lb. axle from the ground to their shoulders, and then over their head.
- Super Yoke / Duck Walk Medley : Contestants carry a 900 lb. yoke 41 feet, and then carry a 500 lb. weight another 41 feet to the finish line.
- Atlas Stones: Contestants lift and load stones ranging in weight from 295 lbs. - 420 lbs. onto raised platforms.

I got a chance to talk to Mark Philippi (Former America's Strongest Man Winner) while waiting for a taxi cab in Vegas last year. I had no idea who he was at the time.
His facility is where CF Las Vegas runs their classes from.
I'm so gonna try to make it to the WSM contest at MSG. Hopefully I'll be able to get off work. Wish Mariusz was there.
