Obviously, this WOD is more than difficult within the confines of the gym and the pedestrian-clogged streets of midtown Manhattan. Not sure what the best way to proceed is...I asked Court and he suggested backwards jumprope to sub for the backwards running. Not the best sub, but can't really think of a better one.
I'd also be open to taking the lunchtime class somewhere outdoors that did not involve a sidewalk street...
I just want to say thanks to you guys for putting up such great links daily. I always get a good read at work via the Black Box.
Also, thanks for recognizing the wonderful coaches we have got at CFSF (my crossfit home). Its good to see other blogs recognizing their wisdom. Can't wait to hit you guys up the next time I am in NYC.
Chadron was the only one on the 7AM class ,so he was able to do the wod as rx'd his time was 10:40
the streets were clear. So by 12:30 the streets will be crowded.Good luck!
How do I know whether or not my fingers are infected?
When I woke up this morning I could barely move the fingers where my callouses ripped yesterday. The callouses were all on the first joint of the finger, so not on the palm (standard callous location).
Where they are ripped is painful to the touch and I can't bend or straighten my fingers without a lot of pain. I washed them out as best as I could today and applied neosporin.
Any advice?
Epsom salt baths, Sam. That does wounds wonders.
Sam if it's red and swollen it's infected go to the er as fast as you can.you don't want to let the infection to get worse.
Sam, if your hand is infected it will be a bright red and warm to the touch and may even be suppurative. Pain by itself isn't indicative of an infection. When I rip mine they always are sore for the first couple of days and moving my fingers is tough. It feels like everything is a little tight. As Brian said, you can use epsom salts and I know that a lot of people do. I, however, was never very fond of them. I just felt like it was an unnecessary amount of stinging for any good that it did. I always just cover them with superglue. It stings a bit too but it's only once and by the time the superglue cracks off, your skin is healed underneath.
Sam, Try dipping them in rubbing alcohol. Just kidding. Go to the ER.
So I skipped the lunchtime class to make up the Yesterdays Burpee/pullup WOD in the park. Best quote, some little kid, "Mommy! Is that man dying?"
Then I ran 4 miles. Did I mention it's friggin' HOT OUT today?
For today's lunchtime class, I decided against running backwards through the sidewalks of lunchtime Manhattan. I had a small class today: Brett (who was working on presses while waiting for his injuries to heal completely), Bert (who's here in NYC just for 2 weeks), and Alex (who's here for a week).
Since both Bert & Alex have been doing CrossFit on their own for awhile, I thought it'd be fun to have them do a CrossFit NYC WOD: Scott's Mom.
It was a tough, fun workout, and one that they won't forget any time soon.
We also did some major squat therapy. Fun times.

Sounds like a new T-shirt to me-- Crossfit: It just looks like it will kill you.
Or have a picture of Pukie with the "Mommy! Is that man dying?" caption.
Allison, good job on not running around Manhattan backwards in 95 degree heat, but making them do Scotts Mom!?!?!? Ugh. That WOD is nasty if you really push it 110%.
thanks for the advice all.
I think that these are more painful than normal, mainly because they are on the finger, rather than the palm.
Adam, tight is exactly how my hands feel. I have to hold them in a constant half fist, as straightening or clenching is not possible.
Therefore, i'm going with "not infected" and just going to try and wait it out.
worked on presses triples. worked up 145lbsx3, then 155x2, and 155x1. better than I had hoped.
Sam I like rub neosporin on open blisters a few times a day. putting a bandaid actually helps mine heal faster too. whatever you do, don;t do a salt pack directly on it.
Missed yesterday's Burpee WOD on account of a scheduled swim. But burpees are way too delicious to miss, so made up that workout today.
Today's warm up:
800m run outside (playing in traffic): 2:46
(1 minute rest)
3 rounds of 5 Strict Pull ups, 10 Push ups, and 15 Squats: 0:47, 0:43, 0:44 (2:14)
(2 minutes rest)
Burpee WOD (10 rounds: 12 Burpees, 12 Pullups): 20:50
Maintained a pace of one round every 2 minutes, while breaking the 12 reps into 2 sets of 6 as opposed to trying to maintain sets of 12.
I'm confident that could have pulled off a sub-20, but this was done at a local Crunch and some guy blocked my access to the pull up bar during the 7th round. Watching the clock burn a whole minute really pissed me off and that lengthy rest just made embracing the suck more difficult...
In other news, usef the wide grip angle bar thing for pull ups, and in the process did something that could possibly be mistaken for butterfly kips. Another plus this is the first time I've done over 100 pull ups without tearing my hands.
That's right boys and girls, no torn hands - ROCK!
10 rounds
12 pullups
12 burpees
15:17
i haven't felt that much pain since my first filthy.
Nice work Brendan!
Great job today guys. I wanted to do todays WOD at the track but woke up late and didn't feel like running in 95 degree heat.
