Gillian
I know you'll make us proud at the games!
And it looks like you've already got quite a fan club on the main site.

will there be a class offered in lieu of the 5 k run? pleeease?

1. good sam-ur hair is looking excellent!

2. what is the diameter of the kipping/pullup bar u guys have in brooklyn? my hands are massively ripped up from all the kipping in manhattan and my grip just feels awful. i got 4 blisters during the last workout. that never happened to me at the last location- now not one spot on my hands is free from a new blister or a ripped up callous.
josh swears the diameter is exactly the same as the small one we used to have but my hands are hinting otherwise. so just curious how thin that bar is.

thx

Happy Birthday, Moon!

Michelle, the BBB bar is the same exact one that we moved out of the old space.

Happy Bday (David?) Moon!

Happy B-day Moon!

"Attacks on soldiers by another soldier usually of a lower rank, known in military slang as “fragging” because a fragmentation grenade was often the weapon of choice, were an alarming problem during the Vietnam War but have been extremely rare in Iraq. The 2005 attack is only the second such case the Army has prosecuted since the beginning of the Iraq war. By comparison, in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970, the Army logged more than 300 attacks that killed 75 commissioned and noncommissioned officers, said Paul J. Springer, a history professor at West Point."

Happy Birthday Moon Man!!!!

Brian-thx-then it just must be that I have not done enough pullups onthat kind of bar and it took some getting used to.

Moon-happy birthday! Mudslide on the way!

Not sure about anyone else, but I enjoy the Box website and postings for the fitness info and the workout inspiration I get from all of you. I don't see what an article about soldiers killing each other and Pentagon coverups has to do with Crossfit or training hard.

Happy Birthday Moon!

Go get 'em, Gillian!

Happy Birthday Moon.

Happy Birthday Moon.

Great video Gillian. Good luck at the games!

happy birthday moon man.

After taking 2 days off of Crossfit, I went to my first Adventure race this past Sunday. It consisted of the following:

1 mile run around and into a lake (up to waist deep water)
2 mile kayak
100 yard portage (carrying the kayak up the beach to the road)
11 mile trail biking, mostly single track
10 Challenges (low crawl, pushups, situps, jump rope, balance beam, football toss, wheelbarrow, word search and word scramble)
5K run

Finished in 2:05:29, in 10th place overall, 5th in my division. 3 of the times in the top ten were relay teams, so despite there being only 60 or 70 people in the race, I was pretty happy with my time.

Here is a shot of my crossing the finish line, with god-aweful form: http://www.flickr.com/photos/27980365@N08/

It was a tough race, particularly the last 1.5 miles of the run, right after coming out of running in the lake for the third time. It was only the third time I have ever kayaked and the first time I have ever done single track trail riding.

Nonetheless, I was really impressed with how prepared I was for the physical and mental difficulties of the event. My bike is crap and an errant rock/root knocked the wheel out of alignment, so it rubbed on my brakes for most of the race and I have no skill with a kayak, but, unlike most of the competitors that I passed, I never, ever stopped. I credit the WoDs for this mentality of not giving in till the end.

Also, I rocked the CFNYC shirt post race and had a guy from the Aeroscouts, based in Fort Drum and fielding no less than 4 teams for the event, come up to me and talk Crossfit. He visits the NYC site from time to time and I would like to give Zack and his comrades a shoutout. You guys did really well and I hope to see you there next year, if you don't have to ship out to Iraq.

To those interested, I will be doing an off road sprint triathlon in the same place (Wading River, Long Island) at the end of August, if you are looking for some fun and physical challenges.

That being said, I think I will pass on the 5K today. :)

Hey Gillian -

Nice to put a face with a name. Mike has told me lots about you.

See you in Aromas woman!

Happy Birthday Moon :)

Kurt, sounds like an awesome time. How long are the sprint tri distances?

Moon- Happy Birthday! Do you prefer stick beatings to birthday bunches to fit your heavy fighting interests?

Brett- .5 mile swim. 10 mile trail bike. 3.1 mile trail run. You can wear a wetsuit, but it will be warm enough without as the swim is in a lake.
You can find out more about it here:
http://www.dirtyevents.com/XterraRace.htm

happy birthday Moon and
Gillian you look fantastic.

The wetsuit makes it "easier" to swim however...

Another Happy Birthday shout out to Dan Lacavalier. When are you coming back to CrossFit?

Hey Kurt,

That race sounds like something I would be interested in, how does one get involved?

Thanks all!

Michelle - I'll take a mudslide only after some of it has dripped on the floor.

Kurt - That race sounds great and congratulations on doing so well. Oh, and I am not a piñata!

Sam- adventure racing is generally much more serious and endurance oriented than the race I did. If you want an idea of what the "real" races are like (often lasting between 3 and 10 days of 24 hour racing across hundreds of miles of outback) go on youtube and look up Eco-challenge or Primal Quest. This year's primal quest just started a couple of hours ago, so you can track what is going on through the website at: http://www.ecoprimalquest.com

To get a taste of the action, like I did, look for Sprint distance races. I found this one through the USARA's website: http://www.usara.com/ and just looked for events that were local to where I live (or in this case, where my parents live). There are plenty of websites out there to explain the basics of AR, but in essense it will be hiking/running, biking and kayaking/riverboarding plus random challenges and often with an orienteering section.

In real races, you get a map, map coordinates for checkpoints and off you go, meaning that you have to navigate on 2 hours sleep a night while spending the other 22 hours in constant motion. Needless to say, the people that do the real races are hard-f'ing-core.

In a sprint race, it is just a bunch of different events, no need to pack camping stuff or survival/medkits, etc. I had a great time and would love to do another race if you or someone else wants to do one. Primal quest has a series of sprint races, but I think the closest is near Pittsbrugh.

If a similar one comes up to the one you did Kurt, i'll totally be up for it. Even it means going to Pittsburgh.

Kurt, much respect man. Never have I looked in your direction and seen you not giving it your all. It is no surprise you kept your mental game. Pretty sure "top ten" would not find me there.

Both you and Tom are putting our training to the test.

Keep us posted on when these races are and when you are doing any "extra" training. Did you swim much prior?

Many happy returns, Moon.

5K run
22:30

Did this one at the Central Park Reservoir. Twice around is 5086 meters. Third time doing this WOD. My last 5K was I believe last summer. My hips and calves are killing me. I guess I need to run more often.

Happy Birthday, Moon!

Coach P- Thanks for the encouragement. I didn't swim at all prior. I took advantage of free kayaking the weekend before to practice for 20 minutes or so, but I really don't know what I am doing in a boat. I supplanted skill with upper body strength, since the rest of the day was mostly leg work. Would actually like to learn how to kayak at some point, so if anyone is thinking about clinics or wants to go to free kayaking on the hudson, give me a heads up.

I will need to practice swimming for the Tri in August and stair climbing for the Urbanathlon in September. Again, if anyone is interested in doing extra oddball training with me, give me a hollar at kurt _ tullar at yahoo dot com. We can set something up.

As a side note, we should hopefully have a climbing rope at the Brooklyn Box on Friday or early next week. That is another skill I have wanted to work on for awhile, so I bought a rope and something to hang it from the i Beam with. See you there.

happy bday Moon!!

Kurt, you're the man!!

Figure since I got a shout out from Keith I should show myself on the board. Been in France, and have relocated to Arizona and built a backyard crossfit gym. Can't believe how many different gyms have popped up recently in NY and after seeing everyone's pics and videos it looks like everyone is making huge progress.

Also, since Keith asked for virtuosity testimonial;
I've been working two a days on a 3 on / 1 off daily schedule using a paleo based diet. The virtuosity programming's focus on traditional "goat movements" has forced me to focus on the skills I'm weakest at and I already notice the difference. A week after resolving to get my double under up to par, I've already been able to string ~20 double unders in a row using Virtuosity's programming focusing on this movement in conjunction with main site workouts. Next step... 20 consecutive hand stand pushups. Keep it coming Keith!

Dan Lecavalier

Happy birthday Dan L!

Moon
I will see you tonight and wish you a happy birthday in person.

Happy Birthday Dan,

looking forward to some competition with you when you're back in the hood :)

About the 0Brian party Weds, I am gonna do by darnest to be there but have 3 things that night! Oh and one is work related--read money!!

If I don't get there--Brian best to you and I second what Ewen (?) Said the other day--Olympic future in store young man! Train hard--eat a lot and away you go!!

To everyone else, see ya real soon!

Jacinto-that workout nearly killed me today. i think i spent 5 minutes on the wallballs and kettlebell swings and 20 minutes and 30 something seconds on the 36 dead hang pullups. and i opened 4 blisters.
you kicked some serious butt with your time. Allison was going to have to cap my workout at 30 minutes.

bring back the kip

23:55

Did the 3 rounds for time of 10 Wall Ball (20LBS), 12 Strict Pullups, and 21 Kettlebell (24kg) swings in 9:35.

Thanks Court for keeping time!

Did the first round with no breaks, but that wrecked it for the rest of the work out. Really need to work on those Kettlebell swings - grip died after the second round and that demolished my ability to do unbroken sets of chinups.

Happy Birthday Moon! Nice duds - is that SCA heavy armour?
