Good news: wrecking apparently begins Thursday in our permanent space.
Bad news: still no keys for our LIC temp space. And, even stranger (though not necessarily worse), it appears we may be temping at another space owned by the same landlord in Williamsburg.
I'm being told we're getting those keys tomorrow, though by now I have as little a clue as any of you. Please direct any wrath about the delay at me, and check back in for any and all news as it emerges.

members--
if you are interested in doing park workouts to supplement the new temp space because getting out to williamsburg isn't feasible for you for the next few weeks, when and where would you want to do park workouts?
Central Park @ Pinetum Playground? Tompkins Square Park? The downtown park over by FDR drive?
Morning? Lunchtime? Evening?
Weekdays? Weekends? All of the above?
I'd like to organize some sort of Manhattan-based park workouts to take advantage of the fact that if we have to be temporarily homeless, at least it happened in gorgeous May weather.
Who's in this with me?
(email me at allison AT crossfitnyc DOT com with your answers and/or leave comments here)
central park!
I can run park workouts at McCarren park in Williamsburg tomorrow. If you still want to hold beginners class then we can figure out something. Just let me know.
Also, tomorrow's WOD is luckily a running one. I'll bring my Gymboss and can help run heats or groups as seen fit. Keep me posted on who's interested.
I'm going running at Riverbank State Park tomorrow. If anybody wants to join me, shoot me an email. It'll probably be during the day as I'm going out tomorrow night deep into Brooklyn.
Gymless Refugees Unite!
May 9 Friday Rest Day Dinner 7:30
(This Friday)
Daisy May’s
623 Eleventh Avenue (46 Street)
http://www.daisymaysbbq.com
In so far (10): Allison, Brendan, Brian D, Hari, Justin, Leslie, Kurt, Marisela, Moon, S2
Who else is in?
I'll be at the dinner.
Park workouts - daytime in Manhattan :)
Wish I could join in for the rest day dinner, but I've got another 50k on LI that starts at 7:30 am, so I'm sticking close to home Friday night. But have a cocktail for me (it's my birthday on the 9th).
if anyone wants to join me, I will be at the E. 6th St track for tonight's WOD, probably around 6:30.
and for any of you punk rock east village types, I will be doing 6:30pm wod's at the 14th St Y(14th St & 1st Ave). They have a decent weight area thats empty, and you can get a fairly cheap 1-2 month temp membership.
where is the track on e 6th? anyone know of any other public tracks in manhattan? thanks.
I plan to be at the East River Park (go east on 6th St - past Ave D over a twisty pedestrian bridge) doing the run probably around 7 or so. If anyone would like to boost their self-esteem by running "with" me (although, I suppose even if you're lapping me, we're still running at around the same time), by all means come on over.
For the E 6th St. track, I find it easy to run down on the East River bike trail from 23rd st. and the FDR, about a 10 min run down.
i would be interested in evening or weekend central park workouts.
daisy may is definitely one of the best bbq spots in new york although i have not been to dinosaur yet.
another spot for future reference:

Greetings from San Diego
Any of you coming out for the Olympic Lifting Cert this month???
4 mile run
35:14
Dinosaur is better than Daisy, just out of the way.
Good to hear from you Allison. Are you going to the Oly cert?
I'll be at the Bedford and 12th street entrance to McCarren park at 6pm today. I'll wait a couple of minutes to see who shows and then do the workout. I've mapped the area and can pretty close to 800m.
Todays WOD
Run 800m 4 rounds for time
Done at Astoria Park
2:46, 3:08, 3:22, 3:14
3 minute rest between rounds.
First time doing this one.
Harder than I thought, especially since I don't run outside of WOD's.
Rob: Yes I'll be there. Finally! I can't wait to go since I've been waiting for this one for such a long time.
I think it will be my 9th cert.. I'd like to hit the CrossFit kids one this weekend too.
Will you be there?? It would be great to see you.
P.S. Zone with a scale is WAY different than eyeballing. I wasn't even close!! Now I'm measuring and starving.
Black Boxers
Though it hardly compares to The Black Box 1.0, if anyone needs a place to workout I'm happy to open up the Gold's Gym that I run at 90 John Street (Financial District) for any of you for FREE til 2.0 is ready.
just give me a shout and I'll get you set up

hey newbies--
if you've been wanting to try a free intro class for the first time (or you've been doing free intro classes and want to do more), just go ahead to one of these free park workouts. don't be shy! just show up, introduce yourself, and join in.
without barbells and kettlebells at hand, park workouts naturally focus on simpler beginner movements like squats, pushups, running, etc., so there's no reason not to join in.
whoever's instructing/managing/time-keeping will be more than happy to suggest ways in which you can scale down the workout to make it easier if you're not currently well conditioned, so don't feel like you're not ready or unable to join in if you're not already "in shape".
for instance, with today's WOD, a newbie could do a series of 400m runs instead of 800m. alternatively, it's also possible to do fewer overall 800m runs, and/or take extra-long rests in between.
see you in the park!
p.s.: i won't be able to join in tonight's WOD because i'm going to a meeting with the co-owners at 6pm, but i will be doing my best to organize and run park WODs over the next few days. just keep checking the blog for info. they're free to anyone and everyone--bring friends! and wear your crossfit tshirt if you've got one.
I can probably also open up the Gold's at 54th and Broadway.
Just remember, that these are Globogyms. which means no bumper plates, no dropping bars, and no chalk. you get the idea
Thank you very much for your offer, Dave!
Dave, that's beyond generous. Thanks. How would people go about contacting you and making use of this offer?
And on a different subject completely: I say our park workout on Saturday morning should be a guerrilla response to this corporate event:
http://www.selfworkoutinthepark.com/main.html
We could stage our workout nearby and make a scene with our grunting, handstand pushups, etc. What says everybody?
Allison_NYC,
California is too far away for me. I'll be going to Greg Everetts Oly lifting class this summer. I'm really interested in CF Kids, though, and have actually thought about making the trip out there for that cert. If you go, I'll pick your brain about it.
Also, I'm not sure of the difference between measuring and not measuring on the zone. I've always been sort of an eyeballer myself. I think it may be time to invest in a scale.
Dave,
Thank you for such a generous offer. I'll send you a line if I'm in either of those areas to workout.
I'm on my way to McCarren. Hope everyone has a good workout.
rob, you couldn't be more off the mark about daisy may's/dinosaur. get it together, alight? don't worry everyone, it's going to be alright.
have to agree with Brendan on Daisy May's/Dinosaur, and Im from the south, but to each their own... Did Annie today since we did something pretty similar to today's WOD last night in the POSE class. Thanks for the offer Dave, and I may take you up on the offer at 54th and Broadway. If anyone else want to join me, let me know. Or if anyone wants to meet in Astoria Park tomorrow evening. jalgera@gmail.com
For those interested, I will be doing some sprint workouts this Sunday if people want to get some fast-paced running in. I'm stuck between either East River or Astoria; throw in some short sprints and metcons maybe? I'll let the masses decide which track to run at; majority rule. It will be in the morning, around 10am.
Did the WOD at the east river track
3:18, 3:29, 3:29, 3:32
If anyone wants to get together and do workouts at the east river park let me know-I'll probably be there again tomorrow.
Hari, count me in for the dinner friday.
just got back from tonight's meeting. josh will be doing a post tonight about all the many interesting things there are to report on, so do please check back on the blog later tonight!
Did the WOD at the east river track.
Lap times: (1:20/3:00),(1:30/3:09),(1:31/3:09),(1:34,3:14)
Need to get one of those beepy things. My lack of real timed/fixed distance running experience is showing in that I really have no idea how fast to run off the block to get me around the track w/o gassing out. My pace feels something like fast/medium/slow/fast.
Elizabeth met me at McCarren park and we made our way to the track just to the east of the park. Two laps for 800m. It seemed like a standard track, and if I'm not mistaken one lap is 400m, right?
Zilla:
1) 3:43
2) 3:37
3) 3:42
4) 3:44
Elizabeth:
1) 3:54
2) 4:04
3) 4:02
4) 4:00
We both took 3 minute rests between sets. At first it felt like 3 minutes was too long, but by the end of my third run I was huffing and I had a steady wheeze for my fourth run. Good times all in all, but I began to question the distance we've been running for 800m at the Box. Was the block every measured?
Rob - Indeed it was! [beams] Around the Black Box block was measured to be almost exactly 700 meters.
12:37 (3:04, 3:07, 3:12, 3:14)
