Game On

And you thought we were going out of business.

Tomorrow, we'll be moving into our temporary space (the 'Cardboard Box'?), a concrete floored (drop from overhead to your heart's to content), roll-doored garage at 817 Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn, a block from the Graham St. stop on the L Train.

Move In: Thursday May 8th

12:00pm-6:00pm: Truck Unpacking. If you're free, swing by 817 Metropolitan and help us unload.
6:00pm & 7:00pm: "Brooklyn Gone Bad", our inaugural workout, featuring everything we couldn't do in our prior space.

Full Schedule in Brooklyn: Friday, May 9th, and Onward

That's right. As of Friday, we'll be holding WOD classes at 817 Metropolitan at 7am, 12:30pm, 6:00pm and 7:00pm (plus, shortly, open gym from 8:00-10:00pm) every weekday, plus Saturday at 11:00am and Sunday at 10:30am.

Come on down.

Central Park Workouts

It turns out our Brooklyn space isn't nearly as much of a pain in the ass to get to as I would have thought. (And I have a long-standing record of referring to Brooklyn as 'Manhattan's waiting room'.)

Still, it's probably further than some of you lazy bastards are willing to go. So, in the short term, we'll be holding classes in Ross Pinetum in Central Park, Monday evenings at 6:00pm and 7:00pm, Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm and 7:00pm, and Saturday morning at 11:00am.

And, to re-clarify, these are on top of the classes in Brooklyn.

For Beginners

Beginner's classes are on: Wednesday at 6:00pm in Brooklyn, and Saturday 10:00am in Central Park. Both are free, and open to anyone who wants to stop by.

As soon as we're settled in, we'll also be kicking back off our Elements classes - Monday and Friday evenings, and Sunday mornings, in Brooklyn. If you're interested, and not already on the waiting list, shoot us an email.

And, Finally

We're still pushing ahead full speed on our Manhattan space, shooting for move-in late this month.

At the same time, if enough of you guys like it, we're also considering keeping the Brooklyn space longer-term, as a foothold in northern Brooklyn, and a first step towards world domination.

As ever, let us know if we can answer any questions, and see you at the Box.

Hell yeah! You guys finally moved into my neighborhood. But seriously, as long as the L is running, it's a quick trip to the Graham stop.

I will happily see everyone there tomorrow night to toss heavy objects from overhead (even though I'm not supposed to).

Awesome, Avery. Actually, from now on I will be actively encouraging people to drop the weights (when not doing so would endanger themselves). This is how it should be. It's only if dropping them endangers others that I ask members to be mindful.

Actually, I was referring to my shoulder/rotator cuff and the "I'm not supposed to lift heavy objects overhead" rule that is still in effect.

But as soon as I am able to, I shall wholeheartedly follow the new "drop the weight as long as it's not on top of someone" rule moving forward.

Graham isn't too far into Brooklyn. It can be CrossfitNYCs Kamchatka express.

ok i am clueless-how does one get there from the 1/9 2/3 from uws and how long should i figure it takes. yes i am THAT clueless but yes i am THAT willing to make the 12:30 class on Friday. BUT I AM DIRECTION CHALLENEGED. I need to figure out if i would be home by 3pm back on uws. any info appreciated.

THX
also
any chance we can make up DIANE on friday at the new space???

Michelle,

I think this is a correct route, but you may want to check my answer.

- Take the 1/2/3 down to 14th street stop (it should be just inbetween 6th and 8th ave)

- From there walk to 6th ave and 14th street (I think there's an underground walkway)

- At 14th st and 6ave you can catch the Brooklyn bound L train and get off at the Graham stop. This ride should take about 10 - 15 minutes

- From there you can walk to the box. I haven't been there yet so I don't know any landmarks it's near

That is probably the best way to get there from the UWS. As a general rule of thumb I would say take however long it takes to get to Union Square and add 15 minutes, since the L also has a stop at Union Square.

Michelle - For foot/taxi/bus/subway routes and timings, try using Hopstop. --> http://www.hopstop.com/?city=newyork

If you can make it to the 14th St. stop of any subway line, you can make it to the Brooklyn space.

You can transfer from the A/C/E, 1/2/3, B/D/F/V, N/R/W/Q, or 4/5/6 to the L at 14th, then take L to Graham - it's the third Brooklyn stop.

Once you pop out of the subway, head towards the White Castle - we're just on the far side of the street from it.

I made it door to door from 50th and 8th in twenty or twenty-five minutes yesterday, so I'd imagine coming from the UWS would only add another five minutes on top of that..

HopStop is excellent, though their time estimates seem to err pretty far on the conservative side.

forget the d train it dose not stop at 14th street.

Did you say White Castle?

I like that we have temptation/motivation right across the street at the heavenly abomination that is The Castle. Well done.

Will try to make it to the Box tonight. Plan is to run from home, do a workout and run home. I guess I will see how this plan survives contact with reality.

So we've basically stumbled into a fantasy novel where the Black Box with its valiant heroes is put against the endless slider army brought forth from the White Castle... Once people start talking about the All-Seeing Eye of Tyler, I am going back to doing WoDs in armor.

Just out of curiosity:

- Will there still be a temp space in LIC?

- Does anybody know how late the East River track is open?

Moon @ Are we back to Murph already?

Moon, I would assume that you have read them already, but if not you should definitely check out the S.M. Stirling "Dies the Fire" series. It is heavily into the SCA/ARMA stuff. I have the first three books if you want to borrow. It's crap, but it's enjoyable crap.

UPDATE ON CLASSES TONIGHT-
I JUST SPOKE WITH ALLISON WHO WANTED ME TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT CLASSES ARE STILL ON TONIGHT BUT JUS A GENERAL "HEADS UP" THAT:
THERE IS STILL NO ELECTRICITY
AND NO RUNNING WATER IN THE BATHROOM
THERE WILL BE HOWEVER BOTTLED WATER AND THEY ARE CLEANING THE PLACE UP SO THAT THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF ROOM TO WORK OUT. SO IF THE LACK OF ELECTRICITY AND RUNNING WATER ARE NO PROBLEM FOR YA-HEAD OUT THERE FOR THE WORKOUTS TONIGHT!

Friday Night Dinner Update

(Now I know how Josh feels.)

I've been trying to get through to Daisy May's all week. They simply don't answer the phone, respond to phone messages, or respond to emails.

Finally, I got a person who explained:

(1) The only way to get reservations and service is to order some sort of "pig deal," which they can't do at this time; or (2) Pre-pay $35 per person for an "Open Menu."

Anything else involves "cafeteria style" seating, and generally no guarantee of anything.

So, a quick vote, please:

(1) Go with the $35 Pre-pay deal (I can take care of it, but then you really do need to show up, if you commit).

(2) Switch to Spanky's

(3) Switch to the Ennio & Michael, the Italian Place in the West Village (Laguardia Place) we went to in March.

I realize that there do exist one or two other alternatives for eating in Manhattan. I've even heard that there are places to eat in LIC and Brooklyn. But I now need to decide quickly and will lean towards whatever alternative leads in the early responses.

Ranking of preference: 1, 3, 2

Notes:
- Nothing against Spankys, but I feel we've been there before even if it was "informally."
- No option is going to make me pout about it and/or not show.

Well, Leslie and I are in for #1 and we will definitely be there... But we will be there no matter what so if 2 or 3 happen, we are happy with that as well.

Also, we doing Diane tonight or something else? Im going to try and make it out there. Hopefully the G isnt its normal unfunctioning self.

I'm in for whatever. Daisy Mae's is most convenient for me then Spanky's. Going all the way downtown for Italian is less convenient. So I vote in order of 1, 2, 3.

See you there.

Hari- I suck for being poor right now, but I don't think I can ante up on that right now.
Have fun tomorrow and tell me how it is. I have only ever had their pulled pork sandwich and it was pretty good.

I vote for 1 but I don't want anyone excluded so I'll show up wherever you tell me to.

Does "open menu" mean AYCE?

I'm still not sure if I'll be able to make it for Friday's dinner yet.

Yarrrr!!

T'is no man, t'is remorseless eating machine!

Based on the five responses above, I will try to set us up for 7:30 tomorrow at Daisy May's (Prepaid $35 Open Menu)

623 Eleventh Avenue (46 Street)

Reconfimed for the Prepaid $35 Open Menu (5): Hari, Justin, Keith W., Leslie, Moon

Please reconfirm for the Prepaid $35 Open Menu (7): Allison, Brendan, Brian D, Erica, Marisela, S2, Tom

Who else is in?

Diane
as rx'd 9:05(pr)

Did this at the Globo gym by my house. $10 for a daily workout.
It was tough trying to find a place to do HSPU's cuz the place was covered with mirrors. Finally found a column between 2 benching stations. Had to travel a bit between the deads and the HSPU's but it worked out. You'd think these people never saw a HSPU in their life.I don't know if it was the triple espresso or the new environment that led to my time but I was pleased. After the first round I though I was going to be kicked out. That globogym music was getting to me.;)

Yes, I confirmed that "Open Menu" means all you can eat. They bring the food out "family" style, and everyone gets a plate.

The time will be 8:00, not 7:30. I will prepay tonight for 10 assuming: (1) at least 10 people will still be in; and (2) they will allow us to add a few more people if we go over 10.

But please try to let me know tonight before 9:00 PM whether you are in or out.

Yeah, that works for me, Hari. Can not wait for tomorrow night.

Hari-Im in for tomorrow.

first time with 225#

Diane with 3 abmats (its time to move to 2- as they were much easier tonight except the last few, guess the diet and dropping 10 lbs is helping) & 225lbs DL: 9:28 at the new cardboard box. Its a stretch to get to from work, but not too bad getting home.

I didnt realize it was all you can bbq for $35. Damn, cant wait now!!!

wow kevin!

Is anyone going from the cardboard box to the restaurant tomorrow night?

Hari, I'm in for tomorrow night as well -- sorry I didn't make the pre-9 deadline.

Who else is in?

Wednesday: globo gym was packed (including a rare sighting of the mythical Barbellcurlus squatracki), so ended up doing a long messy warm-up and some heavy-ish cleans (up to 185) and push-presses (up to 165)

Yesterday: 3' sprint/3' light jog x4 along the Hudson River. Started out conservatively, I guess, since the sprints got longer each round.

Diane at the new Box

135# Deadlifts
Box HSPUs

7:05 (Four minutes faster than last Diane attempt, same subs)

Deadlifts felt easy, so next time I want to try at least 145#.

Took a trip out to the Cardboard box on foot:

3 mile run (around 25 minutes)

Diane 205# deads, 6 "2 abmat HSPUs", then box. I think I got around 10:10, but I was focused on getting advice on form for both exercises. This was the first Deadlift over 135 for me and I wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly. Weight felt good, may try 225 next time this comes around.

3 mile run home (much longer 31 minutes).

I like the new box's....starkness. Will it be open tonight around 6ish?

Made up Diane at Mid City with Michelle, who is turning into a real athlete.

Michelle: 11:00 (105 lb DL's and HSPU's to 4 inch target)

Hari: 13:54 (RX'd weight and HSPU's to a 3.2 inch target)

I'm in, Hari. fine work.

Hari--I'm in.

Kurt--yes, the Box is open tonight for regularly scheduled classes.

Question- if using 2 abmats how many inches is that from full ROM? i.e. what inch target is that?
thx

Hari,

Sorry I didn't get back sooner - I am in. Do I make 11? If that is a problem let me know.

Thanks!

Tom, you're in. (I secured an option for up to 12.)
