is the clinic really full?

Yeah - is there a waitlist? A peek in from the back? If so, perhaps put me on this, yes?

moon i will be running so slowly i am sure somehow we can do a "share"

leslie will u be there tomorrow?

I hope everyone got the memo about the change in the location and the time. 6:15 @ pier 84, there is a restaurant nearby where we'll all meet at.

Yeah if a spot opens, I want in too PLEASE

Michelle -- I'll be there. Waddling behind.

5K row 21:21 (Closer to 21 minutes as I stopped for a bit to listen to Chris and jacinto's tips.)
Thanks for the push jacinto. Thanks to Chris P. as well and nice job on the "Old man" WOD

So, i'm going to a track to run the 5k tonight. What would be a reasonable time?

I want to try and shoot for 20 minutes..

I made up Lynne today. First time for me, so I scaled the bp to 135 (bw=165). Best I've done yet on any grouping of pullups -- gotta get this kipping thing down!

subbed:
1,500 rope jumps: 26 minutes
2.5k row: 12 minutes
100 kettlebell swings(not for time)

5k run (treadmill 1% incline)

23:20 (PR by 1:50)

Sam,
20 minutes is a good target. Pace yourself early on, though, it's usually easier to make up time in the second half of the run.

Jon,
That's a long-ass sub! Good work.

NYT article on push-ups:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/11/health/nutrition/11well.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

I wonder where they got their "national averages" for 40 year olds (16 for women and 27 for men??). Maybe the median would be a better indicator.

I'm skeptical about that national average too. Those push-ups probably aren't chest to deck.

Either that or maybe they're using a statistically tiny sample set which includes Jack LaLanne and they're also averaging ages in addition to averaging push-ups.

"Mr. LaLanne, who once set a world record by doing 1,000 push-ups in 23 minutes, still does push-ups as part of his daily workout."

How bout that for a WOD?

Re: pushup article

“It’s sort of a gender-specific symbol of vitality,” said R. Scott Kretchmar, a professor of exercise and sports science at Penn State. “I don’t see women saying: ‘I’m in good health. Watch me drop down and do some push-ups.’ ”

This professor has never met Serena ;)

I just saw the embedded video that came along with the NYTimes article where they were showing some pretty suspect form from people demonstrating in Times Square. If only they'd taken their camera crew a few blocks farther south...

This is what getting the right amount of sleep will get you.

Tyler, maybe it wasn't sleep that helped you get a pr. Maybe you just pulled a little harder this time? :) Either way, congrats!

Re: NYT article. I highly doubt those national averages are correct, unless they refer to the quarter push ups I often see guys doing at the gym. And honestly, I never really see any women attempting any sort of push up. Same thing goes with pull ups.

I thought I could do real push ups before I started Crossfit, but clearly that was not the case.

the push ups in the video are feeble attempts at best. Doing push ups like that I don't doubt the average crossfitter could do 40 without a problem.

Rob, now I gotta read that article! Thanks!

Nice job Tyler--maybe it was just that you saw me today after so long that inspired you to work harder!!

Yes, Sarena it's true. I imagined I was trying to get away from you and I pulled as hard and as fast as possible. Thank you for the inspiration.

Thanks Brian (and Brian) for the really relaxing, slow paced and toasty jogging session this evening. I am just about thawed out.

No seriously-it was really great- and man all of you guys can run so fast
Greg-its the socks I KNOW it-wow!

I am really so glad I signed up for this-
I do wonder if I used up all my speed at the sign up portion -bc apparently I was the first to sign up-but was DFL in every 400 run.

next week i will be there in a snowsuit. Is there a handicap for that?

leslie- next time I am bringing beer for us.

great job everyone-

oops.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Coach Robzilla challenged us the 5 of us (Kevin, Paul, Martin, Ewen and myself who now certainly run slower than the rest of you) to do a modified "Trevor". Usually done with a team of four people with two working constantly and rotating in, we compensated for the adding of a 5th person into the rotation by scaling up the normal rep count per exercise by 25%.

250 pullups
375 pushups
500 situps
625 squats

26:20.

Strong efforts by all - glad to have been a part of that team.

That NYT article came with a "push up fitness calculator" and I too was shocked by the national averages.

But if you read the article (or read it again...) you'll see that their push up bottom is "have a friend hold a fist under your chest."

So by that criteria I can't give them "proper push up," but maybe "poor way to meet women at the gym?"

MOON-i am not taking a cab to LGA friday-i will be running there.
u will know i got there by the cool breeze passing you by on the security line.

u can squat over to the airport if you like.

5km on a track - 20:52

Pretty disappointed, I was running alone so had trouble pacing myself, I wanted to shoot for around 1.30-1.40 per lap but averaged around 1.44.

Also, I managed to up my pace a lot on my final lap but didn't feel like puking when I finished. This tells me that I didn't run hard enough. Deffo want sub 20 next time.

Thanks to Smallville (Brian D) and The Flash (Brian H) for a invigorating running class on Pier 84 in the warm weather! It's going to be a grueling 10 weeks until the weather gets better.

Good job by everyone today!

And Michelle what you didn't see was that I had a one-armed t-shirt under my hoodie. The socks were for affect ;-)

It was the maroon and blue more than anything else, Johnson!

Next time the class will be faster paced. As soon as it's 6:15, we're warming up whether everyone is there or not. After 3-5 weeks I'm expecting everyone to know the warmup and the warmdown which will make it go even faster, which means more time to run (yay!) and more evaluations and corrections.

Brian and I were very happy with this first class, and we now know what to expect from all of you.

Thanks to the Killer-B's... Running class was great. It was nice going over to Jersey and doing a little running. Anyways, great job all and can't wait to see how much more fun we have. I pray for warmer weather soon though. I don't know how much more this Florida boy can take.

"faster paced", "even faster".
thats funny Brian . :) almost as funny as you standing there for 40 minutes in a T SHIRT!!!!!!!!!!

24:05

Re: the push-up calculator: not only is it chest to fist as opposed to chest to deck, it's pushups from the knees for women. WTF? So I can't even calculate how I compare to other women since I do real pushups. (Though I guess I could see how many knee pushups I can do--I would guess A LOT.)

Rowed a 5K today in 23:12.8. Man, that hurt.

Andrew, the author of that NYT article says on her blog that the numbers in the push-up calculator are based on Canadians "in the good and higher fitness category." It's not figures for the general population.

22:57...not far from what I ran as a chunky sophomore in High School.

Oh, and after running those 6 400's tonight, Im pretty sure the run to Havana isn't quite up to par.

Hey, I gotta request. Can we do the "300 reps" workout for Fridays WOD?

25x Pull-ups
50x Deadlift @ 135lbs
50x Push-ups
50x Box Jump @ 24" box
50x Floor Wiper @ 135lbs
50x KB Clean and Press @ 36lbs (KB must touch floor between reps)
25x Pull-ups
