    Hey!
I vote to lug kettlebells down to street level, find some scaffolding and do Helen alfresco. F the steps. Who’s with me?

  • marisela

i think the point is that kw’s quote has to do with the anti-war people that have the nad’s to say it to a soldier that served our county. Let’s just respect the one’s that do put their lives on the line for our freedom :)

  • Brendan

    word, brett. word.

and, on further condsideration, i figure I’ll go into greater theoretical jutification on the choice of my quote in order to stave off any other deviations in our much beloved blog…
Gen. Franks, when remarking on protesters was probably making a more direct reference to Vietnam era protesters (as this was around the time he began his career) who were notorious for relieving their frustrations on returning soldiers and saliors as opposed to the political structure responsible for the conflict. While this is just an assumption, it might mean his quote isn’t an endightment of people who are opposed to the current conflict.
I read the quote 4 years ago off a buddy’s ROTC shirt. It stuck in my mind as a way of saying you can take the high ground and still get some personal gratification out of it. I’ll try to pick less volitile points of departure for any future attempts at paraphrasing.

and just for fun, I figure I’ll further theoretically justify my choice of quotes in order to stave off any further deviations from our beloved blog.
I’m guessing that Gen. Franks, when making his remark, in addition to trying to boost morale, was referring more to the Vietnam era prostester who was notorious for exercising thier frustrations on returning soliders and sailors rather than the political structure responsible for the conflict. This is only an assumption based on when the general started his career, but in the vein, it might not be a direct, mature endightment on anyone currently protesting THIS conflict.
To be candid, I read the quote off a friend’s ROTC shirt 4 years ago. It stuck with me as a way of saying you can take the high road and still derive some personal gratification out of it. I thought paraphrasing it might be appropriate. I’ll try and pick less volitile points of departure hereon in.

  • Hari

Did General Franks make some controversial remarks? Sure. But I cannot disown General Franks anymore than I can disown my grandmother.
You need to understand where this guy is coming from. When he talks about having been under sniper fire and worse, he’s not just “misremembering.”

    ‘Ripsters’. I love it.
    Represent, fellow nerds, represent.

Presuming that every anti-war protester is – or will be – one of those misguided types who disparages the veterans of this country makes about as much sense to me as presuming that every soldier is – or will be – a modern 2nd Lt. William Calley.
Brett – I think a street-level WOD would be a great idea, if just for the promotional angle. Any lawfolk able to chime in on what the legality is there? I certainly don’t want to get taken to a holding cell while shirtless or even wearing Underarmor…

  • Justin

Im down for a street level WOD as well, I just don’t want to be responsible for pulling down a scaffolding. With my big ass swinging, you never know.
For all going to the Boston O-Cert… Not sure how everyone is deciding to get there, but if people arent opposed to taking a bus, megabus.com has trips for the weekend for a dollar each way. Takes about 4 hours but I dont think its quite as rough and tumble as the Fung Wah (which I have no issue with taking either).

  • Robzilla

Yes, Moon. I agree that one must be wearing proper attire when being held for disturbance of the peace. I believe that business casual is acceptable, but in the good ol’ days it would be nothing short of a suit and tie.

  • Hari

For what it’s worth, I think the word worth focusing on in the Franks’ quote is “face.” When you “face an antiwar protester” conveys to me a different meaning than “when you see an antiwar protester,” or “when you meet an antiwar protester.” And it certainly means something completely different than when you meet someone who opposes the war.
In this context, the word “face” implies to me a situation in which there is a potential conflict, which would be in line with what many returning veterans used to encounter fairly regularly.
I don’t take the quote as implying contempt for those who oppose war, so much as implying contempt for those who oppose warriors. Most thinking people (a category I certainly place General Franks in) absolutely understand why people might oppose any war.
In my opinion, our military leadership is wants the same final outcome preferred by pacifists. They simply disagree as to how best to get there.

  • Coach P

That is the way I started CF-scaffolding everywhere. The Box can not do that just in case the thing breaks, and that includes allowing the use of a kbell for it.
And this could be the last Helen with the stairs, so come down and PR the little lady (considering Eva).

Love this workout, first time as RX’d. Really want to try this outside and with a kettlebell for once.

  • Jack Bauer

I second (or fourth at this point) Brett’s street level WOD. Wear some Black Box respect t-shirts and it’s great promotional advertising. And in case any idiots walk by telling us that we are “hurting our knees” the KBs will make them think twice about approaching us. I’m in.
And Justin a bus trip a dollar each way?! You sure it’s a bus and not a Flintstones buggy?

  • Moon

Michele – Perhaps we should pick our menu for the next Cert trip. I don’t see the Hops “Darion’s Special Super Chunky Mud Slide”here, but at least we checked Chipotle off the list.

From the Observer article on “Nerds of Steel”:
“The only way for the buff nerd to participate publicly in physical fitness is in some sort of vaguely ironic organized sports effort, like the weekly football game in Prospect Park played by an assortment of Brooklyn literary types. Also acceptable: kickball, dodgeball (particularly at free McCarren Pool indie rock concerts), croquet, p√©tanque, bocce, ping-pong, four-square or potato sack races. But to take any of these games too seriously is to reveal one‚Äôs latent competitiveness, which is seemingly at odds with the values of this cohort; those are jock values!”

  • sam

I’m totally in favor of the outdoors wod this evening. If we can find some convenient scaffolding that is..

Hey all – Leslie and I are working on transportation and hotel for everyone… you’ll be gettting an email from me soon.
Justin, thanks for the tip on megabus, we’ll check into it!

  • Juan G.

so is anyone going up that weekend just to hang out and support the fellow crossfitters?
i wanna go but wasnt planning on doing the cert

  • Jeff

I’d love to do the WOD outside too, but I don’t see this happening due to what Coach P says.
I also have to take issue with the Observer article. It’s titled “Nerds of Steel” and while it does reference some nerds, it also talks as much about hipsters without making much of a distinction.

  • michelle

ok exactly when was this photo shoot of the crossfit men taken?

  • Moon

    It’s my first BoxBirthday!
Twas on this day in 2007 that I stopped researching, occasionally sticking my head in this weird new gym as an observer and handed over my saved-up dollars and signed the ole waiver to join this cult that is unique in that it lets us eat protein and encourages sleep.
Singling out people would take too much time and my small hamsteresque brain might forget someone, so instead I would like to say thanks to a few groups of people:
The trainers who have taught, pushed and yelled at me to be better and stronger. You are each a digit in the fist that has punched me in to a new level of physical ability. I would not have thought this to be possible without a lot of pain, sweat and blood. And I was right in concept, but not in scale. I may have paid you a fair chunk of money over the past year but I still feel that I am in your debt.
Those shining stars who demonstrate – sometimes with annoying ease – that it can indeed be done faster, heavier or without partitioning, excessive sweating, crying (I still say nobody cries in the Black Box – it’s just “eyeball sweat”), etc. This is very inspiring to me and will continue to be so until I catch you all. Oh yes…one by one.
Those who are with me (or near with me) in skills and capabilities. I am enjoying our mutual progression alongside each of you and would like to think that we draw strength from each other as we race through the rounds and reps together.
Those who are starting out or who are otherwise struggling. As a guy who spent all last spring racking up “DFL” badges, it is encouraging to see your determined faces return time after time – sometimes even more inspring than those suspected replicants mentioned 2 paragraphs up.
And if I could name just one person for special thanks it should certainly be my nifty girlfriend, Tiffany. She has put up with the long hours, the couch-based collapses, the limping around, the radical diet shifts, and the wringing-out-a-soaked-squeegee-like hugs I’ve greeted her with for exactly a year now.

    Happy BoxBirthday Moon.
You’ve come a long way since the days of doing the wods quietly with your Bluetooth headphones.

  • Brett_nyc

So I was poking through the main wod archives and it seems I let my 2 year anniversary slip by. March 20 ’06 was the first wod I ever posted to. Funny enough it was Helen done with jumping jacks, a backpack full of books(37.5lbs) for the swings and all sorts of pullups.

  • Moon

    21 Nov 07 – 16:35 w/ 20kg bell.
    27 Mar 08 – 13:42 w/ 24kg bell.

  • Tiffany

Did my 1st Barbara at home yesterday.
Thick band pullups, pushups on knees, Moon stood on my feet for situps.
    1 – 9:38
    2 – 15:00
    3 – 22:35 (The Clown was close!)
    4 – 15:24
    5 – 13:35
I could really have used an Abmat for the situps – my towel sucked. Anyone know where we can get one? Maybe a bulk order so lots of people can get one?

  • Justin

14:33 as R’xd… So fucking disappointed as I know I should be doing better.
Happy Boxaversary Moon! It has been quite a privilege training with you this past year.

  • Juan G.

    well said Moon man.

  • Jeff

    Tiffany
As I told the birthday boy, Abmats are supposedly a little tricky to find and you’ll have to resort to looking online. Just off the top of my head, here’s one place:
    http://www.roguefitness.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=140
Maybe you can get a bulk order together w/ other Boxers and split the shipping costs.

Happy Anniversary Moon! Great training with you. Hope you can pull me through the looking glass and into the world of SCA heavy fighting.

First WOD that includes running. Liked the running hated the people. Apparently, some guy that decided that stepping in front of 6’2″ guy doing sprints was a good idea got nailed and then thought about doing something about it. I was already gone by that point, but it seems Justin’s presence made him think twice.
Really looking forward to the new place, whereever it will end up being, so we can get these WOD’s closer to legit. Had a great time.

happy birthday Moon, you look great keep it up.
