W00t! I was hoping for this WOD.

  • AllisonNYC

BOO. I was NOT hoping for this WOD.
No can do for me. My back is SO tight. 14# med ball cleans killed me so I don’t even want to think about 185# DLs. Impossible.
Muscle up, dip & pull up practice for me tomorrow.

  • Jeff

I normally like this one, but my back is in the same position as A2’s. This might be a good opportunity to relearn my DL form to use less lower back, but I’m not predicting any PRs.
    Keith
The rest day workout was great. More Oly practice? Yes, please!

w00t!! Check out the affiliates page! Go get ‘em Erica!!!

    080111: (HSPUs to 1 Abmat) 14:54
080307: (HSPUs to the floor) 15:57
First time as Rx’d. Now if only I could do more than 2 HSPUs per minute in the last round.

  • Paul S

Great job Ewen. You HSPUs have come a long way.
    I’m jealous — I still suck

  • Jack Bauer

Diane is definitely one of my favorite WODS but I’ll have to pass this time. Experiencing those wonderful flu-like symptoms that have been going around and would hate to contaminate others at the well ventillated and spit-fee Black Box-like I did to Michelle last time! My bad.
And you’re right Michelle, Erica aka Bionic Woman has truly earned a one-armed t-shirt! Way to go girl!

  • Hari

Erica is the definition of a real “Die Hard” CrossFitter, quietly working her way through each WOD using whatever substitutions are necessary. During the Filthy Fifties, one-arm jumping pull-ups, kettlebell presses, etc., from start to finish. Respect.

  • Kurt

Nice work, Ewen! What a difference a couple of months makes.
Now that I can actually stay in a handstand for a little while, guess I should start doing negatives.

  • AllisonNYC

Hari: What’s the definition of a “fake” “die hard” crossfitter?

  • Brendan

decided to skip diane and make up cindy today. i added a weight vest and made it through 17 rounds.
    feel better, jack.

  • Robzilla

For those of you who are interested in trekking out to Long Island:

Brendan:You added a weight vest and still got 17 rounds?
So what! Can you do this:http://youtube.com/watch?v=a7JWqiMGdug&feature=related
    A true Crossfit WOD!

  • http://www.crossfitwiki.com/Crossfit/Ewen Ewen

Thanks Paul and Kurt. Last time this came up on Jan 11, I realized I hadn’t done HSPUs in a WOD since October. I decided to try to fit a few into my warm-up whenever I could, and I think it paid off. Still a long way to go…
    Brendan, impressive as always.

  • demi

Bruce Willis now that he is bald is a fake die hard

  • Hari

    AllisonNYC,
“Hari: What’s the definition of a “fake” “die hard” crossfitter?”
In general, the term “die hard” is not meant literally, but rather to convey the sense of a person unwilling to give up when faced an extremely difficult challenge. It is in that sense that I refer to Erica as ‚Äúreal die hard Crossfitter.‚Äù
I find any other use of the term to be hyperbole. Referring to someone as a “die hard” fan of a sports team is just silly. How difficult or courageous is it to root for a team? The implication that someone is a die-hard simply because he or she is enthusiastic strikes me as absurd.
Your question suggests that you interpret my use of the word phrase “real die hard” to imply that there is also a “fake die hard.” This is a bit like saying asking whether referring to someone as a “real elite athlete” somehow implies there are also “fake elite athletes.”
Although I find the construction awkward, I would say that a “fake die hard” is someone who draws a massive amount of attention while avoiding the real hard work of struggling with what does not come easy.

  • AllisonNYC

Hari: If there is no such thing as a fake die hard then why did you need to clarify that she is “Real” ?
I took the bait on this one because I knew your comment was related to me. I know I’m going to hear things like “allison not everything is about you blah blah”. But really, until my videos came out when have you ever heard anyone ever use the term die hard in CrossFit? So I think it’s safe to say that it was related to me and my Die Hard videos.
It’s sad because you tacking that on to the beginning of your compliment to Erica took away from that compliment. You complimented one person at the expense of insulting another. It was unnecessary.
You could have easily just left it how you posted on the affiliate blog:
“Erica quietly works her way through each WOD using whatever substitutions are necessary. During the Filthy Fifties, one-arm jumping pull-ups, kettlebell presses, etc., from start to finish.”
Instead you decided too add: “Erica is the definition of a real “Die Hard” CrossFitter”
    Why?
    you also said:
“I would say that a ‚Äúfake die hard‚Äù is someone who draws a massive amount of attention while avoiding the real hard work of struggling with what does not come easy.”
Rather than try to guess if I interpreted this is right, I’ll just ask: Hari, do you think I avoid the real hard work or that things just come easy to me?
Do you think I am a “fake die hard”? I certainly have drawn a massive amount of attention. We get that. I certainly do not avoid hard work. Nothing in CrossFit comes easy. I’ve never skipped a workout becuase of a need to sub things.
Again, I don’t think I have a choice but to take this personally. Since no one else has been referred to as a Die Hard until now it seemed like you’re deciding who’s the real deal and who’s not.
ERICA: I think you’re awesome and I’m so impressed by your dedication. Keep it up. I’m sorry for using your name in this and please know it’s not personal.

  • AllisonNYC

    to

  • Margie

Eloquently put Hari. I always appreciate precise disection of language.

  • Brendan

    oh jesus…

  • AllisonNYC

if you don’t like it don’t read it brendan

  • Moon

Perhaps it should be said that Google lists several references to “die hard” (and not the movie – we’re talking being dedicated to CrossFit) on both this site and the main board reaching back to at least 2004.

  • http://www.crossfitwiki.com/Crossfit/Ewen Ewen

Eloquence doesn’t excuse baiting, and having a bait dangling out there doesn’t excuse taking it.
You should both know better than to impose this kind of tripe on the rest of us.

  • b maher

“How difficult or courageous is it to root for a team?”
Being a Cubs fan is difficult. Wearing a Shockey jersey to Lincoln Financial Field is courageous.
    :) sorry, couldn’t resist.

  • Jeff

    Way to go, Erica!
Too bad the picture of Juan laughing and pointing wasn’t also included as your ‘before’ picture.

  • Brett_nyc

Brendan, We all know that the real reason you made up Cindy weighted is because you suck at HSPU, handstands in general for that matter, and you are afraid of them and they make you weep like a little baby in a little baby bed.
btw, nice job on weighted Cindy.

  • dan def

b maher– to take it one step further, wearing a Denis Potvin NY Islander Sweater to a Ranger game at the Garden goes beyond courageous and enters the land of suicidal.
Fake Elite Athlete: David Wells when he pitched a perfect game for the Yankees 40 pounds overweight and hungover.
THERE IS SOME SILLINESS ON THIS HERE THREAD TODAY FOLKS!!!!

  • Hari

    AllisonNYC,
I described Erica as a “real die hard” because I think she exhibits the characteristics that define the term when used correctly.

  • john McClain

so bruce willis doesn’t crossfit? wow! at least I found my new nickname.

  • Jack Bauer

    Yippeekiya mother(shutyomouth!)

  • AllisonNYC

there’s always silliness on these threads dan def
again Hari, why did you need to include “real” especially since you said yourself that there really isn’t such a thing as a “fake”.
And why post that here and not on the blog?

  • Hari

    AllisonNYC,
I used “real” to denote the correct usage of the term “die hard” as opposed to the common and less precise usage.
For example the term “hero” is frequently used to describe athletes. When referring to someone who has actually risked his or her life in pursuit of a worthy cause I might write “real hero.” This does not imply that others are fake heroes.

  • Brian D.

6:41 as rx’d. Nice 2.5 minute PR for me.

  • xuan mai

Brian D. – Congrats on the PR!

  • Brendan

    brian d–monstrous.
brett–that stings. you told me last night before bed that i was the greatest handstand pushupper ever. you’re a treacherous, treacherous man.

    —————
This isn’t really a fair statement. I think Brendan is expressing what a fair number of us feel-namely that we have been here before and would prefer that this blog stays positive, focused and supportive, even if that normally takes a jocular tone. Besides, he is entitled to his opinion of the situation as much as anyone else.
If you and Hari have an issue (and I am not sure that an issue exists), handle it personally or through email. We know where this is going and I think a good portion of us would prefer to avoid the drama. That is not to say that I know, or even really care, whether Hari was baiting you. That is between you and him. I think both of you (and Erica) are inspiring in different ways and that all of you have a good claim to the (apparently) coveted title of diehard without any modifiers attached. All three of you have punked me in various WOD’s despite giving up a significant weight, height, age, limb, whatever, advantage to me. I have seen all of you gut through workouts and that has pushed me to not only do more and hurt more, but to want that, sometimes so bad I can taste it.
Don’t sully that image by bickering in public. I think that at least a few of us think it would be better that real disagreements are best resolved face to face and in private, where all of the problems with text discussion are eliminated and no one feels that the public eye is upon them.
Most of all, let’s keep this positive.

  • Brett_nyc

    lmao Brendan.
    good stuff Brian D.

  • Jack Bauer

Damn you Brendan! That’s why you didn’t pick up my calls last night! When you said you were going out for takeout, I didn’t think you meant Asian Cuisine! Must have been a quick meal! hmmph
Oh you done did it now Brett! Homewrecker! Next time I see you at the Box you better guard your grill!

  • http://www.sarenasworld.blogspot.com sarena

    Awesome work Brendan! And Brett!!
Feel better Jack Bauer–get strong for next weekend!
    And Erica–way to go!!

  • AllisonNYC

Kurt: Fair. Brendan, I’m sorry for my comment. Read it.
I’m not sorry for voicing my opinion. I wish that these things could be reserved for face to face conversations. Sadly this is where this stuff starts. Then when I respond I’m labled as negative. Unfair and uncool.
I like to be positive all day everyday. I’d rather not feel like I’m put in a position of ignoring a comment and feeling like like I’ve been b!tch slapped or responding to it and feeling like I’m being a trouble maker.
I’ve been told once before to be careful of what I say and how I say it on the internet because things are easily misinterpreted. Maybe others here should do the same.

  • Brett_nyc

Greg, Brendan was complaining that your chocolate sauce isn’t Paleo.

  • Jack Bauer

    Paleo Chocolate Balls
    How does this sound?
    1/2c almond meal (TJ’s)
    1/3c cocoa powder (TJ’s)
1/4c coconut oil (cheaper to buy the flakes from a health food store).
3 drops of stevia extract (NOW)
    2 packets of splenda
    1/4 stick of butter
    1/8c coconut milk
    1/8c heavy creamer
Combine sugar and cream over medium heat. When hot add chocolate. Stir. Put in freezer for 10mins. Roll in balls. Back in freezer for 10mins. Enjoy!
    Booya!

  • marisela

gentlemen, i would prefer that you keep the “love” talk to a minimum. you’re making me jealous.
but i think of how tyler ripped his pants last night at the bottom of an ohs demo and it makes it all better.

  • marisela

lifting the 45# bar, no less

  • Jack Bauer’s Saturday Night Date

Jack….. looking forward to your delicious chocolate balls.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtHMUiHptcY

  • Jack Bauer

ROFL!!! See Brett you can keep him! I already got plans!
And Tyler ripping his pants on OHS would explain why he didn’t have the nerve to post any links to healthy eating sites today. He’s too busy eating sausage links!

  • Justin (aka John McClain

Wow, so Jack’s hand is now typing independent of his body now… Interesting.

  • Jack Bauer

No, Justin aka John McClain (damn good one by the way) the person in question is someone else! And Scooby and the gang will reveal this person to be…

  • dan def

I have Bauer’s date right next me who can’t wait to pop Jack’s chocolate balls in her mouth tomorrow night. She insisted I type the above message.

  • marisela

the homoerotic undertones are too subtle. i think you all need to get together and do a WOD.

  • michelle

greg i see that now that u r not going to the cert you are feeling free with all that humor u were saving for the folk in NC. chcolate balls and all.
    from your white friend, michelle

  • Margie

    Jack-
Have you tried honey, agave nectar or maple syrup instead of slenda? I know they are sugars, but they are also natural, have other good nutrients besides the sugar, and I think better for your body at the end of the day. Otherwise that recipe sounds awesome!
Oh, wait, what about the dairy? That technically takes it out of the paleo realm.

  • michelle

i did diane revised as per tyler-who was having a showdown on the phone the enitre time about properly taking down people’s times in the holy crossfit 4th grade notebooks we have there.
    bw 117
    5 rounds
    9 dl 125lb
    9 hspu
    15:05
did first two rounds of hspu on blue yoga box
then while tyler was all flipping out on the phone switched to two ab mats and did 3 sets unbroken. I asked Tyler which muscles was I supposed to be using to get through those hspus and his answer was very helpful- ALL OF THEM!
Erica-I am looking forward to your Diane posting. my dear even if your cast and the photo up on the affiliate’s site were fake-you still are amazing.
Sarena-I think its ur fault keith split his pants.:)

  • michelle

butter and heavy cream? i am in greg.
that didnt come out so well.

  • margie

Dude, Michelle you are strong! I don’t think I could do that many reps of DLs at the weight and I certainly weigh more than you.

  • Justin (aka John McClain

Not sure when butter and heavy cream became Paleo, but Im down… And Dan, are you sure thats a woman you are with? Her name doesnt happen to be Wanda does it?

  • Jack Bauer

Wanda is a nice person. You’re shallow Justin!
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=aktPK28QFi8

  • http://www.sarenasworld.blogspot.com sarena

Michelle, did he eat all those chocolates himself??
Jack Bauer–you didnt make that did you?? Is this b/c you left what I made you and someone else ate it? You know I have the nut butter for you though correct?
Anyone else want some paleo friendly nut butter??

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEW8Y6iICuE Newbie

You guys are great at CrossfitNYC. I love reading your dirty laundry. The fact is, people outside your box people don’t know how good you are Allison. If you are willing I say do a couple head to head WODs and youtube them. They can puke up or shut up. I say good WODs would be “Fran”, “Nasty Girls”, “Helen”, AND “JT”. Of course not all on the same day (but that would be a killer video). You don’t have to have the best times, but I’m sure having good times and form will shut up some people. What do you think Hari, are you up for the challenge?

  • Hari

Upon further consideration, I need to acknowledge that there is merit to AllisonNYC’s interpretation of my comment and it was less than honest of me not to admit as much.
Allison, I stand corrected, and I apologize.

  • michelle

“Newbie” while reading the box’s dirty laundry you must have seen some of Hari’s times posted-or did you skim over those just for the dirty laundry? In any event if you missed the posts, u would have seen that that both A2 AND Hari are outstanding athletes. which is only one of the reasons why crossfitnyc is so great.
