"CrossFit Women: Why Not Roar?" by Lisbeth Darsh, owner/trainer at CrossFit Watertown.
I'm a woman and I'm confused: I love CrossFit even though, according to the dominant theories on women and competition, I should not. CrossFit, with its quasi-military culture, posting of standings, and inherent performance-oriented hierarchy should make me want to run screaming in the other direction toward some scrapbooking club or, at least, a nail salon. (Lucky for me, I don't like either place. In fact, I'd rather have my nails pulled out than endure another vacuous conversation centering on hair or nails or whether somebody's butt looks big in a pair of jeans.) CrossFit is a competitive beast. We grunt, lift heavy weights, talk about "snatches" and, when someone fails to meet our standards, we call them the pejorative term for a kitty. I'm not certain this is what our grandmothers would call "normal" behavior for women.

What do you call a guy with no arms and no legs that wrestles? Dustin F---ing Carter!

Have you ever read a really stupid warning label and thought what idiot actually was dumb enough to do the thing that this label is warning me against? So perhaps you can imagine how stupid I feel having to write this to all of you that should be smart enough to know better. PLEASE DO NOT SPIT ON THE FLOOR OF THE GYM!!! Imagine my shock when I had to chastise someone for spitting on the floor of the gym...twice! The person in question said in his defense that nobody had told him that we had a rule against it. To me it is obvious that this sort of behavior is unacceptable. I hope it is now obvious to all of you too. If you have to spit use the barf bags or spit in the trash or go to the bathroom. Spitting on our floor is behavior worthy of expulsion from the gym. Seriously, I will not tolerate this and neither should you. This is your one and ONLY warning. On a similar note, please pick up used tape and bandaids and other stuff that I don't want to touch. Thank you.

...Yes, the floor was mopped after the spitting incident.

The story of how Milo of Kroton got his strength has been told for over 2,000 years. Briefly, his father gave him a bull calf to raise. One day, his father asked him, "How big is your bull today?" Milo ran outside, picked up the calf and carried him inside to show his father. Each day, his father asked him "How big is your bull today?" and each day Milo ran outside, picked up the bull and carried him to his father. This went on for a number of years. As the bull grew, so did Milo’s strength.

Unfortunately, we do not have bulls, but we have found that young children work just as well...

My love for the medical establishment continues. I went to my annual physical last Wednesday, looking for a clean bill of health and a referral. Instead, I got orders to check my blood pressure five times a day and an uninformed dismissal of my referral request.

I have no doubt that my doctor is a well-intentioned man. He'd have to be, considering the way he dresses himself. Picture this: thirty-something, 5'11", one hundred and fifty pounds, night-vision pale, dressed in a ratty blue oxford, a two-sizes-too-big checkered jacket, and olive slacks hemmed for an impending flood.

Clearly, this is a man more concerned with the practice of medicine than making the cover of GQ, a fact that I found reassuring—for approximately five minutes. To read more click here.

Speaking of running.

Our Brian Harkins and Brian DeGennaro are preparing to teach a CrossFit Running Workshop. The Brians will teach you the basics of the Running Technique as well as put you through some high intensity speed drills and anaerobic training. This dynamic combination of technique and training will maximize your efficiency as well as increase your speed and endurance for your next big event. This 10 week program will prepare you for the upcoming running and triathlon season or simply give you a better foundation for doing the CrossFit WODs.

This is a 10-week program that meets once a week. Tuesdays at 6:15pm at The Black Box. Dress for any weather as these will be held outdoors. Class will be held rain or shine or snow. It begins March 11 and costs $100.

Sumo deadlift high-pull, 75 pounds (Reps)
Box Jump, 20" box (Reps)
Push-press, 75 pounds (Reps)
Row (Calories)

In this workout you move from each of five stations after a minute.The clock does not reset or stop between exercises. This is a five-minute round from which a one-minute break is allowed before repeating. On call of "rotate", the athletes must move to next station immediately for best score. One point is given for each rep, except on the rower where each calorie is one point.

Chief Petty Officer Nate Hardy was killed Sunday February 4th during combat operations in Iraq. Nate is survived by his wife, Mindi, and his infant son Parker.

Complete 32 intervals of 20 seconds of work followed by ten seconds of rest where the first 8 intervals are pull-ups, the second 8 are push-ups, the third 8 intervals are sit-ups, and finally, the last 8 intervals are squats. There is no rest between exercises.
