"To derive power from a ritual it must, in some way, stand apart from our ordinary lives. It is not uncommon for us to have so much of our energy and attention directed towards our daily routines and our goals that our focus becomes narrowed. We may even have become preoccupied with our doubts, our fears, or our pain. These things can isolate us. We may lose connection with the rhythm in our lives and the passage that we share as human beings on the planet. This is what the existential philosopher Martin Heidegger called a state of 'forgetfulness of being.'" Renee Beck and Sydney Metrick The Art of Ritual

Lift With Your Head by Chip Conrad
Excerpt from the forward:
"And so Chip gives us a guide to physical culture. It's an antidote to the poison of plastic bodies; a sorbet for the palate that is tired of the artificial taste of sport supplements and spokesmodels. Physical culture is one part science, one part art, and one part something more intangible--call it joy, passion, poetry of movement, the smell of iron in the morning, whatever you prefer. It's whatever hauls us out of bed at oh-dark-thirty to wake up the muscles with a round of kettlebell swings, makes us grin through the pain of exertion, makes us cheer for other lifters, or finds us wrapping our fingers around a barbell to enjoy its solidity, to anchor ourselves.
Am I a lifter? Yes, I am. Are you?" Krista Scott-Dixon

So that would be 280, 185 (good luck with that) and 140. Are we set up for the bench press?
Can we even bench press at the black box?
This WOD is strong encouragement for losing a few pounds.

We've managed to perform this workout on three previous occasions at the Box. It will get done somehow.

Kieth, is the scaling going to be 225-150-115lbs?
30M/170/5-10
Um yeah. i tried this WOD this am. I was short on time so i couldn't do the whole thing, but i wanted to get a feel of what it would be like. I warmed up with 2 light sets of Linda then attempted the full weight. I did the 10 rep set. I had to scale the DL down from 255 to 225, full BW on the bench at 170 and 3/4 BW on the clean at 125. DL's aren't my strong point, I would probably scale back more to 215 to complete the workout, the rest was doable. I'll post once I complete.
First encounter with this particular CF b!tch.
DL 280 (as Rx'd), BP 165 (90% BW), Cl 140 (as Rx'd).
1:01:21
Bench press was the hardest, even scaled down, while cleans (power cleans, that's the only way I roll) were the easiest out of the three. My hands are Quizno's-style mm mm mm mm mm, toasty.
Oh, and the bench press rack-a-stack plyo box setup was pretty nifty. Thanks Keith for spotting us.
I did Linda for a 150# person: 225dl, 150bp, 115cl.
I did squat cleans for all of them.
32:54
It's slower than last time, but I did power cleans last time which are far easier.
Glad that it's over. :)
Cool to have a crossfitter from Mt. Baker join CF NYC.

Anyone up for a 25th Anniversary Blade Runner: Final Cut trip this Sat at 10 pm? Seems this is the last weekend it will be in the theater. I am locked in and ready.

Level 1 is pretty serious (keeping in mind these are probably strict pullups). Maybe we can do this on a rest day.

Thanks for doing Linda for me. I was worried I'd have to do it for myself.
Maybe I'll pay back the favor and do it for some random 120 lb person.
yet another great commentary on the Again Faster blog: "A Dose of Humility":
http://againfaster.squarespace.com/articles/a-dose-of-humility.html
skipped "Linda," chose to row 5k for the first time ever, did it in 24 and a half minutes. not bad, i suppose, for a first time going that distance (according to the C2 site i was around 50th percentile for my gender, age, and weight class). looking forward to doing it again and besting that time.
LMAO Hari that was awesome!
Allison,
I totally agree with you about the Again Faster Blog. He produces one outstanding post after another.

Went down weight on BP since shoulder is having a hard time! Overall, I was happy.
Thanks Court foir hanginmg around super long.
Great job everyone.
Greetings from Arizona.
Very funny Hari.
So I just finished the three bars of death at LA Fitness as rx in 31:40 (155 lb male 225 dl, 155 bench, 115 power clean) when this guy comes up to me:
Guy: Did you just finish Linda?
Me: Yeah! Do you Crossfit?
Guy: Yeah. I was wondering where all barbells went.
Turns out he is a Mesa firefighter and he tells me that Crossfit is the only strength and conditioning program used by Valley fire departments. He said the cert last weekend for Valley firefigters in Mesa was a huge success.

From the July CrossFit Journal:
AFT weighs 150 lbs, but does Linda scaled to 200 lbs (300 lb DL, 200 lb BP, 150 lb Clean) in just over 30 minutes.
Josh Everett (12:23) and AFT (13:44) do Linda as RX'd.
These frightening facts fits well with the Again Faster post Allison mentions above.
Ok, so for those of you who missed it, dan def just posted a 31 minute Rx'd Linda. Could somebody post an embarrassingly slow time like mine, just to even things out?
Thanks
I'm dying here at work. I need excercise. Please, someone help. I missed my morning wod slot and I've been in withdrawal for that last 7 hours. Now I have another 3 hours to go.
i actually went to the box.
saw the cluster fuck that would be linda and decided to sit it out.
i'm tired as crap and my hip flexor is bothering me.
so i didn't do a damn thing except go for a coffee run.
good times
makin memories
Ewen,
I give you huge credit for doing it as RX'd. I'd rather do 90 minutes as RX'd than 30 minutes scaled back. My problem is that I simply can't do more than 2 or 3 BW BP's.
I'm toying with the idea of ending all my substitutions next year. The only problem is getting 8-12 hours to do 30 muscle-ups.
Marisela,

So Hari-I am assuming then you are doing Linda for me this evening?
let me know how I do.
thx much

Sarena, to answer your question on the crossfit.com, yes women do this as rx'd from time to time, however, it is a fairly rare woman who has the upper body strength to do bw bench press as rx. If you really want to do this as rx, I think you would (as a woman) have to do some specific bp work. I suggest weekly 5x5 bench press workouts a la "Starting Strength". Ask Keith about this, he can hook you up.
-Max
Hari,
Thanks, but my BPs were 90% bodyweight. Having failed my first try at a BW bench press, I decided to scale down so each of the 55 prescribed reps wouldn't have to be a 1RM. In the end, it was a pretty close call.
From memory, it went something like this: (5,3,3,1);(3,3,2,1);(2,2,2,2);(3,2,2);(2,2,1,1); (2,3) etc.
Now that I know what Josh Everett can do, I solemnly swear that one day I too will do Linda as Rx'd - in less than an hour, hopefully.
Ewen,
I'm in the same boat. Past 85% BW BP, I really have touble doing more than 2 or 3 at a time. I'm thinking we need to add more pushups and ring dips to our warmups.
Hari, I was gonna suggest you try it for my weight. You have gotten so strong!
Maximus thanx but ye I realized that Nicole, Annie, Eva T and few others prob do as Rxd. Don't know if I will ever acheive that easpec w/ BP. My shoulder injury and upper body strength are definitely limiting factors,

done at 225lbs, 155lbs, 115lbs, somewhere near 40min, kept having to wait for slow ass Greg. :)

wow, juan, over 2000 lbs. on the DL? :)
Hari-that is a bit slower than I would have liked but I appreciate the valiant effort. thanks again.:)
BW 165
Linda
DL 247.5lb as rx'd
BP 165lb rounds 10 to 8 then 155lb(94% BW) rounds 7 to end
CL 123.75lb Full squat cleans as rx'd

Yeah my time was slow as hell (15 minutes slower to be exact) but this is my 2nd Linda and last time I scaled it to a 150lb person and did power cleans(big difference from full squat cleans).
Thanks to sarena for gutting it out and Court, Keith and Juan for spotting on the bench and being patient.
Personally I would have continued doing BW BP but I was down to singles(triceps turned out to be very sore and tired from of all things, l-sits!?) by the end of round 8 and I didnt want to inconvenience the other guys since it would have been much longer. I usually look forward to deads but with this weight I wanted to quit by round 5.
The cleans really tired out my legs which didnt help my deads because they got ugly. I started using alot of back and hitching halfway through.
Don't feel bad Kevin I did the exact same thing and my time was 46 minutes. Thanks for Dammit for the positive reinforcement.
Brett it was finally good to meet the man with the wicked time-you were awesome to watch. Couldn't have gotten through it without the push.
Hari-nice work man as always!
Just happy to alive. You can't kill Jack-but you can make him suffer! LOL
Michelle,
We'll do better next time. (Any chance of your dropping to 90 lbs between now and then?)
OMG! Kevin I did it--I called it just as we were starting today! Murph for Fri! Thats gonna be a major ouch at this point!
considering I am sitting at the computer eating cheddar goldfish at 12 am-not a chance in hell Hari. :)
Made it back to the gym last night to battle this bi-atch and i completed it although had to scale the DL's way down and cleans slightly. Overall a good showing and happy with my time for my first linda.
