Three Things

1. The gym will be temporarily closed, this Friday (4/20) through Sunday (4/22), as we have some new construction taking place (o-lifting platforms, jump boxes, etc.), and we Four Musketeers will be off upping our CF certifications to the next level. Apologies for the inconvenience; at least know that you’ll be coming back Monday to a better gym with better coaches. We think it’s worth the couple of days.
2. Schedule change! As people are sitting around for a half hour for no reason between the two classes, we’re shifting the 7:30pm weekday evening class to 7:00pm, and the 12:30pm weekend classes (KB and O-lifting) to 12:00pm. The schedule page is updated to reflect this. New times start this Monday (4/23).
3. And, finally: If you want in but haven’t already done so, sign up for the Steve Cotter kettlebell seminar; it’s already halfway sold out after less than 24 hours.
Now back to your regularly scheduled workout programming.

Since it was Allison’s Birthday I decided to sub “skin the burpees”/”Burpee the Cat” for Rowing. This exercise involves doing a burpee, then jumping up to the rings and doing a skin the cat for 1 rep. We did 3 rounds of 12 “skin the burpees”/”Burpee the Cat” and 21 hang power snatches.
    Tomorrow’s workout is “Michael”
    Three rounds for time of:
    Run 800 meters
    50 Back Extensions
    50 Sit-ups
If you want to run outside, that’s fine otherwise, we’ll find a fun substitution for running. This will be your last chance to Get Some before we go to Ann Arbor.

  • Kevin

Sub is 50 double unders. Court and I were’nt about to run in the street at 1230PM either, that would have been insane.

Run 800m or 50 double unders

    Happy Birthday Alison.
Sorry I couldn’t join everybody tonight but I had to accept an award for the community service I’ve done since arriving at NYU. Since this probably isn’t going to be the last class I miss, I thought that I would post my time here so at least everybody would know that I wasn’t slacking.

  • Ewen

Maybe you could annouce the seminar on the affiliate blog page of crossfit.com?
Even if it’s almost sold out already, this kind of event would help put CFNYC on the map.
Hope everybody’s enjoying the weather here (while it lasts).

  • Kevin

Thats a great idea about the seminar Ewen.
    Today’s weather is amazing.
I did some kettlebell work with my wife in Astoria Park at the track field.
Also did 12 “Burpee the cats” at the pullup bars. Those made me feel queasy, like being on some crazy amusement park ride. Of course I got the odd stare from folks. I guess that happens when you do Crossfit in public.

  • sarena

Avery, my friend from LA–Tavi_and I did a workout in central park today. It was glorious weather and we expected others to come but that didnt happen! Avery and I warmuped a bit at the pullup bars; I did that and some lunges and squats. Then for our workout we did 10 mins of walking lunges across a nice legnth (i am bad w/ distance), 20 airsquats, lunge back, 10 pushups nad so on…then we did handstand holds and stretching.
It was fun and so nice being outdoors

  • Kim

Matt, my climbing partner, and I did an “alternative sport” – a 6-1/2 hour hike (my guess is 13ish miles) up in the Catskills. It was incredible. Saw a Peregrine falcon!
    Best, Kim

  • Justin

Shit, I forgot all about the park today… I have tommorrow off and kept thinking it was Saturday. Sorry for not showing up.
Kevin, do you live in Astoria? Leslie and I are in Astoria as well and were in the park yesterday working on pull-ups and sprinting up the hill with our dog.

  • sarena

NO worries Justin and Leslie. It will happen again. It was jst too nice not to work outdoors.

  • michelle

Nice pic of Mike at the cert in Ann Arbor. And boy am I glad our shirts are not yellow!

  • Kevin

Hey Justin. Thats great that Leslie and you are in Astoria. Nicole and I live in Woodside which isnt too far. We recently discovered the track at Astoria Park and checked it out to do kettlebell work and run. It was awesome . Its great to train outside on days like today. We’ll definitely do it again.

  • Kevin

Michelle, where did you see the Ann Arbor pictures?

  • michelle

Go to the Ann Arbor site and then their blog and they have a bunch of pix posted.

  • Kevin

    Thanks

  • michelle

    u got it

  • sarena

Did u see that smile on Keith’s face in the group shot! Looks like he enjoyed laying on the heat in Ann Arbor too!

  • Kevin

Subbed 16kg kettlebell thrusters for wall ball.
This was painful since I worked pullups yesterday and now have massive blood blisters and torn calluses after this WOD. Fun stuff
    15:49

  • Ewen

    Subber 16kg kettlebell thrusters
    16:39
Disappointed with my pull-ups today, and tore a callus for good measure.
Oh, and Kevin kicked my ass, but that’s no longer noteworthy. ;)

  • Allison

I just now saw all the birthday wishes–thanks so much you guys! As much as I love CrossFit for its philosophy and practice of elite finess, it’s the people that make it so special. Wish you could’ve all been there at the cert with us–it was lots of fun to meet fellow CrossFitters from all across North America.

  • http://www.dammit.com dammit

subbed 45lbs barbell thruster for wall ball
    14:40
    deadly

  • Paul S

    Subbed with 16kg kettlebell.
    16:03
    deadly, agreed

  • Hari

    24:42
    Sub 16 KG kettlebell thrusters.
    Last 20 PU’s jumping

  • Adam

    16:40
    subbed 45lb barbell thrusters
    Pull-ups on thick bar

  • Kevin

Great times on the WOD everyone! I dont know about anyone else but that 16k bell felt really heavy. I think its the the way the mass is displaced. Its all in the center. Not spread out like an Oly bar. I would have liked to try it with the bar. Next time.

  • juan g.

I whacked myself in the chin with that 16k.
definitely subbing with barbell thrusters next time.

  • Adam

To sub with a kettlebell you have to hold it by the handles but upside-down so that the bell portion is higher than the handle. This helps to prevent hitting the chin or the face and helps with the overall feel of the exercise. The only downfall to using the kettlebell in this manner is that once you’re finished, your forearms are jello. I suppose that’s really another benefit and not a downafall.

  • Justin

So how exactly are we doing Linda today? Or are we just doing a completely different WOD?
